1.00.07 SciFi night fighter concentration

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

1.00.07 SciFi night fighter concentration

Post by wosung »

Campaign 43, 1. turn:

I'm wondering about the intense concentration of German air defences at night:

There are several occasions of +200 night fighters co-ordinating with +350 Flak in ONE hex. It's been a clear night, made for HeNaJa wild boer tactics , but still this seems to be over the top.

The Kammhuber line worked with Radar grids leading single night fighters. The friend/foe situation in the above scenario would be a nightmare.

Plus, what about electronic warfare? In summer 1943 during the Gomorrah raids on Hamburg the night fighters and the flak were blinded by windows/chaff/dueppel.

Game does intentional "coordination" of all elements to fasten turn resolution.

Have you switched all NF to bomber command along with moving them closer to the coast in east England, gives the German NF crews something to worry about when they see 100+ NF as escorts [:D]

Losses are very low in the screenshot, which is the most important. Lot of planes involved, but few actual combats.

But having one raid been attacked about 50% of all mission-capable German night fighters in the very first turn at the Northern edge of the Reich?

Its the mere concentration he's commenting on I think. I would tend to rationalise it as a 'hex and surroundings' type report. Also 350 bombers takes a while to pass, so they aren't all there at once...

Maybe. But changing the mechanics to have fewer night interceptions, then having to tweak air combat to keep a correct night loss ratio, that means twice the work to get the same end result. I prefer seeing this as an abstraction ("planes on alert" or something like that).

Being listed doesn't mean all of them were attacking. Raid is big and deep enough for many to be alerted and take off to intercept.

That's right.

Flak reporting is even more tricky as system keeps registering all potential flak units while raid is in progress and resolves it either prior the interception, target attack or landing. So sometimes you may see many flak in the water hex. it means that Raid was passing some flak concentrations before that.

The only problem I see that player has no control how to limit reaction range for the fighters. There are extra rolls and other automatic measures, but big slow raids can attract much more than player can desire. We think to add interception limit setting for the air groups, but till it is done you can affect it by

- Changing doctrine setting to lower Air Superiority mission percentage so it won't try to assemble 400 intercepts.
- Set manual load out to avoid usage of drop tanks. Ex. setting extra gun load out for the NF can be quite useful.

Pavel, I think you've done a great job polishing up the entire air game. I haven't had a complaint in months![;)]

Now if you could see our task/bug list, Chris. :)

It might took up to 10min. for me to open excel file with all items. Luckily most of them were closed, so it is much faster after release.
