Resource Question

Post by kip1213 »

I see now I have certain citys that need resources. For example SF. I have a lot of resources in Salt lake city, how do I transfer resources from salt lake city to SF, do I do an air transport? I know I can ship resources, how do I get resources out of salt lake city, or a land locked city to another city that need resources?

You do not transport Resources manually overland. Resources, just like supply, oil and fuel are pushed automatically by the code. The movement can be pretty powerful. I have seen 35,000 resources pushed in just one supply phase in an AI vs AI game in Japan, and 65,000 supplies pushed in Manchuria.

You ship res/fuel/oil/supply to places like island which are not connected to overland network, or entities that miss crucial items. The second example would be Japan needing resources or India needing fuel.

Resources (in a contiguous land-mass) flow automatically to where they're needed, there's nothing you can or need to do to move them about. There are a few special cases, though. Look at NW Oz, where Resources are produced at the base 2 hexes S of Port Hedland. There's a rail connection to PH, but not to the rest of Oz. Here, you'll need to use shipping to load Rs at PH for delivery to Perth.

Some places have a net demand for Oil/Resources that can't be met. Pearl needs Rs, which can be shipped from Hilo, supplemented from WC ports. IIRC, New Zealand needs to ship Rs from the South Island to the North Island.

Oz needs Oil to keep its Refineries and HI running at full capacity. Some players turn off the Oz HI, & depend solely on shipping fuel & supply to Oz. Others will attempt to ship Oil to Oz, to keep its suite of Industry running. At game start, you can ship Oil from the DEI to Oz - all shipping fleeing the area should load Fuel or Oil! Later, you can ship Oil from LA to Oz - but you can't load Oil on the West Coast b/c it's all being used by US refineries. However if you turn off USA Refineries for a week, you'll stock up enough unused Oil to keep Oz refineries running for over a year.

You've got to decide how best to manage your industry, & realize that shipping costs fuel, & shipping requires escort protection against enemy subs & surface raiders. In the early war, Allied TKs & AOs are valuable to you & vulnerable to the enemy.

Supply moves different levels on different days. There is one day a week where supply moves at large levels. You will see a trickle to the west coast ports, and then one day a big flood. Excess supply, resources, oil, and fuel all gravitate towards larger ports. Especially ports in use. After a few weeks the larger ports on the west coast will be swimming with supply. The US has the most extensive rail network in the game, so supply moves in huge quantities. I've had SF at around 10 million supply with my freighter pool running constantly.

One thing that is worth doing and doesn't really cost anything is to build up US bases to maximum builds. There are a number of permanently locked units (can't have their HQ changed) that can be used to build bases. Some US combat units (mostly infantry divisions) that are permanently restricted have engineers that can be used for construction too.

With the newer patches, when an air base builds to 8 or 9, the aviation support doubles. This helps training in CONUS because you can train up twice the pilots at a given base.

Another thing I learned today....I thought it was a bug when my bases were reporting twice the AV support I actually had devices for.

In all my time playing the Allies I have never even thought about moving resources.... IMHO there is no need to worry.

I don't see it as a matter of worry. I see it as a matter of aesthetics and endeavoring to model what would have been done.

Just because there was a war going on economies weren't going to simply shut down.

I almost always set up a small xAKL TF set to Continuous Supply to ship the accumulating resources out of Port Headland and back to a rail head at Perth.

I also ship resources to Pearl since it needs them for its factories to operate out of the red.

Christchurch needs a little fuel for its industry to operate out of the red. If all you do is stockpile fuel at Auckland without distributing a little to Chrictchurch you are handicapping your own industry.

There are multiple examples like this across the map.

Even though the Allies don't have any real control over their industry the way Japan does, I believe its worth examining the Industry Interface and identifying the locales that are short of necessary resources and oil and fuel so I can decide which ones are worth the effort to get out of the red and which are better left unattended.

Its level 8 at which they double.

In the Port Headland case it's worth pointing out for newbies that your habit only works against the AI. It never tries to take northern Australia. It doesn't patrol the NW corner. In my PBEM game I haven't owned the northern coast, including PH, for about a year. And if I did, and I sent xAKLs there, I would give a steady stream of 3 VP gifts to Lokasenna, who would gladly take them. If I escorted them with small fry (all they're worth) he'd send a CL from Soerbaja to have lunch.

History is great, but the game isn't history. Oz makes an excess of Resources enough to run the whole economy without PH. Loka strat bombed Kalgoorlie half to rubble and I never missed one day's production in any HI or LI city without it or PH. And any excess xAKLs I have are running fuel from Hampton Roads to CT. Not historic either, but fuel has utility. PH resources are chrome.

Just my opinion.

The Stock AI does not indeed come after NW OZ.

The Ironman AI, however, routinely makes a play for Perth making the Perth-to-PH run somewhat risky at times.

I take great exception to those who routinely attempt to remind me that the game is not history as if they believe an exact duplication of history is what I am trying to accomplish.

I endeavor to impart whatever degree of realism I can within the frame work of the game and sometimes in spite of the framework of the game.

If the gov'ment of OZ simply shut down transport shipping between Perth and PH, those miner would be up in arms over the destruction of their livelihood and the gov'ment would have yet another war on it's hands.

To some of us chrome is what matters most as it enriches the experience.

Obviously each of us is entitled to our own 2 pennies.

That's true. I was attempting to speak to newbies through your post. Routinely using PH for Resources will lose them ships.
