Sep/Oct 1943. Axis #2. Southern France [61,25]. Land Combat.

The second land combat is near automatic (before the odds shift) and results in the destruction of a US mech corps and CW infantry division.

Sep/Oct 1943. Axis #2. Southern France.

Guderian and Kesselring at used to reorganized the disorganized German ground units and a very air units too. The axis situation in France is very good. From the allied perspective, it's rapidly deteriorating.

Sep/Oct 1943. The Eastern Front. The Caucuses. Luftwaffe Ground Strike.

On the Eastern Front, the Germans get things started by a successful ground strike against Soviet command and control (i.e., HQ unit). This strike was opposed by the remnants of the Soviet fighter force, which swept aside by escorting Luftwaffe fighters.

Sep/Oct 1943. Axis #2. USSR [66,74]. Land Combat.

The Germans carry out two land combats in the East. The first is a 3:1 attack on the assault table and is a costly victory for the Germans. The Germans destroy the Soviet infantry army but lose two strong units to do so.

And every bit of this support is needed as the Germans roll a 2.

Sep/Oct 1943. Axis #2. China Sea. Non-Phasing Init.

The USN decides to initiate combat against the IJN in the China Sea. The IJN wins the surprise roll, decides to continue the battle and holds the surprise points for the air to naval attacks. Not sure if this was wise as only 1 IJN nav air gets through, with 2 shot down and 1 aborted.

Sep/Oct 1943. Axis #2. China Sea. Air to Naval Battle.

However, the 3 cleared US bombers all have their bombs reduced to 0 and do no harm. The one cleared IJN bomber unit does great harm by forcing 2 US battleships and 2 heavy cruisers to abort.

The US decides to stay and fight, however, neither side is successful in their search and combat ends for now in the China Sea.

Well, I dare say the Allied expedition to France is done. Might be best to clear out, save for a beachhead at Marseilles and the mountains near Italy (thus controlling ports) and invade Italy instead.

Given the position in Russia, I don't think I could continue playing as the Allies; I would resign and start over.

I would blame my defeat on rules misunderstandings early in the game. That would be my position, and I would stick to it.
I thought I knew how to play this game....

I think that with the Caucasus oil in German hands, things are very bad. Also, it appears the Allies don't have the units or the transports to send build units in large enough numbers into France.

Now, it isn't unheard of to see the USSR come back out of what seems to be an impossible position, but that can only happen if the Wallies have the necessary assets to make sure the Euroaxis lose a lot of units. It appears the Wallies can't do this...

Teaser: I played this game to the bitter end and enjoyed every minute of it. Lost a lot of sleep too! With the entire "World in Flames" (sorry, couldn't resist), there's always one or more theater(s) where something of interest is going on. I hope you enjoy reading about the final two years as much as I enjoyed playing them. [;)]

By the way, MWiF is like a drug ... I think I need an intervention ... [:D]

Sep/Oct 1943. Allied #3. Weather.

Fine across the map. The US takes a super-combined (combined w/O-Chit), the CW a combined and USSR and China take a land.

Sep/Oct 1943. Allied #3. Brest, France. Ground Strike.

With the allied position in southern France deteriorating by the minute, the US and CW decide to launch an invasion of Brest in the hopes of regaining the momentum in France. They start things off with a ground strike against the out of supply German 9-4 corps there. With the axis focus on combat operations in southern France, they have neglected to maintain supply of their troops in Northern France, including Brest. So the successful allied ground strike reduces the strength of the 9-4 elite German infantry corps to 3.

Sep/Oct 1943. Allied #3. Brest, France. Ground Support.

In addition to successfully disorganizing the defender of Brest, RN and USN carrier air units provide 7 factors of ground support to the amphibious attack.

Sep/Oct 1943. Allied #3. Brest, France. Land Combat.

The allied amphibious invasion against Brest is a high risk, one might say desperate, attack. The allies can only manage a 2:1 +2 attack, even with the defender disorganized and out of supply. This attack has a likely, but scary 70% chance of getting ashore. That is, there's a 30% chance for total failure. But as you can see in the screen cap the attack is successful and the allies get ashore with no losses, however, the invading units are disorganized (only 20% chance of that NOT happening).

Sep/Oct 1943. Allied #3. Brest, France. USAF Air Reorg.

The USAF (really the US army air corps at this time in history), uses some of its heavy lift capacity to reorganize one of the two corps that successfully invaded Brest. This should help (some) in the expansion of the beachhead next allied impulse.
