Orphan Ann: "You forgot about the 2 aircraft carriers. Also, perhaps I don't annunciate clearly, it was 'a' battleship, not 8". [:-]

Technically there were 8 BBs put out of action and more than just the Arizona and Oklahoma were sunk. The Nevada was beached to avoid sinking and I think three others were sunk and later raised. The Arizona and Oklahoma were just too badly damaged to be put back in action. The raising effort was actually on the cutting edge of ship salvage technology at the time.

So the FDR conspiracy "theory" is not a "fact"?

Bill you are right, but a better choice of words would have been "8 BBs were put out of action or sunk" which would be more consistent with "the facts" as we now know them!

The raising effort was actually on the cutting edge of ship salvage technology at the time.

Anything specific to say that? Since Battleship salvage was first done by Italians after World War 1, Leonardo Da Vinci that capsized.

A detailed account of the problems faced:
http://www.battlecruisers.org/ldvtech.htm
This included taking all coal ammunition, turrets and cutting the funnels by divers underwater, then bringing the battleship up side down to a drydock. Then sealing it, towing it still upside down to the sea again and righting her.

Done in 1918-1921.

In 20's and 30's they had the most advanced knowledge in Sorima(Società Ricuperi Marittimi) company specialized in world wide salvage. Part of this knowledge will help to develop the frogmen special forces of X flotilla.

It is an excellent example how a problem and a tragedy gives birth to knowledge and an industry.

After Leonardo da Vinci there were also the salvage of Kaiser Navy Battleships at Scapa Flow by the British using some of these techniques.

I guess I miswrote about the cutting edge nature, though this article considers it one of the largest salvage jobs in history:

According to Alan Zimm's operational analysis of the Pearl Harbor attack the IJN 800 kg bombs suffered from a 60% dud/low order of detonation rate. The level bombers scored 10 hits - only 4 functioned as advertised. One produced a spectacular explosion on USS Arizona which obscured the fact that the majority of those bombs did nearly no damage at all.

Certainly was. And the only comparable in WW2 but with less then half number of battleships was Taranto.
