It might just be my imagination, but it seems like recon units have a better chance of not dying to mines when they encounter them.

Recon units have a little better chance of locating mines other then the normal method all nations use of simply driving over them.

That probably a function of unit size. There's tradeoffs, as always.

1. Small units will suffer fewer casualties in a mine strike. But, they are easier to annihilate by direct and indirect fires while breaching, making a wasted effort and wasted time.
2. Larger, more survivable units will lose the combat power you want and need on the other side of breach.

The mechanics in the game seem to be what the US Army calls the "In-Stride Breach". This is in contrast to a deliberate breach, like busting the berm during Desert Storm. So, a Battalion Task Force (mix of tank and infantry) is organized as Company Teams (also mix of tank and infantry). It was an infantry task to do the breaching. This was drilled to the point of only needing a radio call to a platoon that would be something like "Move your element forward and breach". Take about 15 min to get a single lane through a single belt, but there would not be just one belt. Probably need to blow 2, maybe 3 mines in place. Mrak some, and lay down engineer tape.

Mad Russian could expound lots on breaching.

would an artillery strike help to clear obstacles or a minefield?
