Ground Unit Training

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

Ground Unit Training

Post by dereck »

I've had the US 29th Infantry Division parked in Plymouth in refit mode and it's experience has gone from 55 to 60.

Is that because of being in refit mode and under a maximum training level (like in WITP)?

Is that how one would train units and if so what is the maximum a ground unit can be trained up to without having to be in combat?

Thanks.

According to the manual:

Ground elements increase their experience level
automatically during the supply and replacement part of
the logistics phase through training. Though this is the
only time ground elements gain experience, the amount
of combat the ground element participated in during the
previous turn positively affects the ability of the ground
element to increase the number of experience points
gained. Ground elements can train up to the morale
level of their parent unit (9.1). Ground elements that
have an experience level lower than their unit’s morale
will increase their experience at least one point per turn,
but have a chance to gain up to a total of five experience
points. The normal experience gain is two to three points
per turn. If an element’s experience is less than half of
the unit’s morale, then the one point gain in experience
each turn becomes a three point gain. Ground elements
in units in good supply, especially if they are located at
a depot (20.1.1) will be able to gain more experience
during training, as will ground elements that participated
in combat the previous turn. Ground elements with
an experience level equal to their unit’s morale will
not be eligible to increase their experience until their
unit’s morale increases. Ground elements will not lose
experience just because their unit’s morale dropped
below their current experience level.

So moral is the threshold to which your unit can train.

So no national morale like in WitE?

That is how I understood it yeah. Unit morale is the value up to which units can train.

There are national morale levels similar (but not exactly the same) as WitE and these will impact the morale level of the units (which in turn impacts the experience level).
All understanding comes after the fact.

So the closer the unit gets to these NM values, the less likely a moral boost?
