New pacific book

Post by oaltinyay »

For all those interested ... there is a new Pacific War book by Mark Stille now. It's 'The İmperial Japanese Navy in the Pacific War'... I liked his osprey books - so this one maybe good also.

Just wanted you guys know about it...

We've been talking about it earlier. Reviews are mixed but I ordered it yesterday to add to the library.

Pretty good ship coverage. Nothing on planes. Standard survey on weapons and doctrine (about a chapter on each). I'd say 3 out 5 stars. Not a bad general reference.

I think you could do worse than Tolland's Rising Sun for an overall view and then for some drilling down:

Rising Sun, Falling Skies - Cox (Java Sea Campaign)
Guadalcanal - Frank (Guadalcanal)
The Shame of Savo - Loxton (The Battle of Savo)
Singapore - The Pregnable Fortress - Elphick (Malaya)
The Forgotten Fleet - Winton (The Pacific Fleet)
Shattered Sword - Parshall and Tully (Midway)
Kaigun - Evans and Peattie (Japanese Navy)
There are also some respectable titles (not too deep) from Osprey under the Campaign Series - most of the island hopping battles.
Nomonhan 1939 - Goldman (Pre-war Russia/Japan clashes)

I would recommend all of these unreservedly.

Don't forget these 3 books from HP Willmott:

Empires in the Balance: Japanese and Allied Pacific Strategies to April 1942

The Barrier and the Javelin: Japanese and Allied Strategies, February to June 1942

The War with Japan: The Period of Balance, May 1942 to October 1943

One thing I really dislike about this book is that the ships are referred to as "it" and not "she" (although I understand that she is not a universally accepted term for a ship?).

I have this book now, and I have to say I can't recommend it. It's OK, has some photos I haven't seen and nice diagrams, but I didn't learn that much. It provides a description of the primary ship classes and some history, but very little above that.

I think KAIGUN is a much better book; less of a technical reference, but much more on the strategy and conditions that ultimately shaped the IJN Fleet
