Infantry - Best Battlefield Practices?

The new Cold War turned hot wargame from On Target Simulations, now expanded with the Player's Edition! Choose the NATO or Soviet forces in one of many scenarios or two linked campaigns. No effort was spared to model modern warfare realistically, including armor, infantry, helicopters, air support, artillery, electronic warfare, chemical and nuclear weapons. An innovative new asynchronous turn order means that OODA loops and various effects on C3 are accurately modeled as never before.

Infantry - Best Battlefield Practices?

Post by kool_kat »

Gents: [8D]

I was reviewing the FPC-RS manual and was curious on the best use practices for infantry.

Based on vets' comments in this forum, I gather that infantry is best deployed in covered terrain, primarily urban, and given hold commands to hunker down. But what about the infantry transport? Should it remain in the same hex as the infantry? It looks like some of the infantry firepower is derived from their transport?

Comments? [&:]

I also have referenced the earlier thread on infantry too -------------> tm.asp?m=3750276

Infantry transport stays with the infantry in the same hex except while they are moving. When that happens you get asked how far you want the separation between the infantry and the transports.

MW,

The transports "stay" in the hex with the infantry now since they are in the counter. Firepower of a mechanized units is a function of their subunits. Each can deal with different threats better.

1. When possible, move using covered and concealed routes
2. Deploy in the best available cover and concealment
3. Examine the ranges of the anti-armor systems in your subunits. Give the units clear line of sight to 1000 meters beyond this range. This gives the unit time to spot and fire at max range. If the enemy is spotted at max range, they will close a hex or two more before your units can fire.
4. Keep Readiness high as possible. If it is safe, set the unit to go to Resupply after movement. Think of this as unit leaders setting up a hasty defense or doing final prep before an attack.
5. Smoke. Put it on or in front of infantry being or about to become engaged. This degrades both enemy direct and indirect fires.

Another point getting missed by some folks is line of sight does not necessarily equal line of fire. Infantry can see targets a few kilometers away but they generally don't carry weapons that can reach.
