Ideas for Beaufighter TF X improvement.

Post by Dili »

This model was setup to have improved capabilities at very low level since it was a ship strike aircraft with torpedoes or rockets. The problem is that specs(speed/range) are all worse since they were measured obviously at low level while the normal models were measured at much bigger altitude.
Since there isn't performance per altitude in bombers/attack aircraft i am thinking of cheating the values in climb and maneuverability. Any other ideas?

Just an opinion, but planes such as this might be categorized as torpedo planes to avoid the low altitude morale hit..
Seems to me aircrew trained for low altitude missions have a couple of advantages, one being they will be less vulnerable to most targeting from UNDER their plane......Just a thought..

One of the more disappointing aircraft in the game. Basically all strafing attacks are very weak in game and this bird only carries 250 lb bombs making it less than stellar for anti shipping or ground attack. In air to air combat it just seems to get pwned by everything. It is just the way the game works. In low level attacks it really is the bombs that do the killing and the strafing is just chrome. I don't know but if there was a way to really boost strafing after say mid 43 to reflect the more common use of rockets. Keep it simple and not try to implement rockets, just give Allied aircraft a boost in penetration and firepower to reflect their use.

I never got the torpedo equipped beaufighters to attack with torpedoes but that may have been something I was doing wrong. Anyone else use them with success?

Thanks m10bob , i would have probably categorize it as a torpedo aircraft anyway but this just reinforces it. Doesn't the option attack bomber - i suppose can only be applied to level bombers- have benefits for strafing?

crsutton maybe some problem with aircraft or weapon in database?

Well, I just think strafing in general is very weak with all aircraft. It is just a game mechanism more than anything else. It is also very dangerous to aircraft with very higher flak losses, morale and fatigue penalties. My experience is that it is not worth it and best to bomb from 6,000 ft.-even with attack bombers. Though 6,000 feet is best for aircraft that carry decent bombs, bombing with Beaufighters at 6,000 ft really does not do much.

Train them is pain in the a** but they will do it:

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Mergui at 51,58

Weather in hex: Partial cloud

Raid detected at 66 NM, estimated altitude 15,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 18 minutes

Allied aircraft
Beaufighter TF.X x 15

No Allied losses

Japanese Ships
BB Haruna, Torpedo hits 1

Aircraft Attacking:
15 x Beaufighter TF.X launching torpedoes at 200 feet
Naval Attack: 1 x 18in Mk XII Torpedo

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Victoria Point at 49,65

Weather in hex: Light rain

Raid detected at 67 NM, estimated altitude 13,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 18 minutes

Allied aircraft
Beaufighter TF.X x 13

Allied aircraft losses
Beaufighter TF.X: 4 damaged

Japanese Ships
CL Yahagi
CL Oyodo

Aircraft Attacking:
13 x Beaufighter TF.X launching torpedoes at 200 feet
Naval Attack: 1 x 18in Mk XII Torpedo

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Afternoon Air attack on TF, near Victoria Point at 49,65

Weather in hex: Light rain

Raid detected at 36 NM, estimated altitude 16,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 9 minutes

Allied aircraft
Beaufighter TF.X x 12

Allied aircraft losses
Beaufighter TF.X: 2 damaged

Japanese Ships
CL Yahagi
CL Oyodo

Aircraft Attacking:
12 x Beaufighter TF.X launching torpedoes at 200 feet
