HQ Squadrons

Post by Malagant »

Many USAAF "Groups" include an HQ Squadron.

Does this Squadron serve any "HQ" function?

No, they will shortly disband. They offer nothing more than a few more planes and pilots and give no special benefit to the squadrons.

It's just the way USAAF units were organized at the start of the war. The unit commander is often a bit more senior and often has better stats, but that's about the only difference. Functionally the HQ squadron was merged into the group and the group commander usually picked one squadron to fly with. Sometimes the group commander would move to a different squadron so as to not play favorites.
