Boardgame- World in Flames Final Edition with most addons and optional rules.
RTS- Starcraft Broodwars Armageddon

Single battles or full scale wars with or without empire building?

Full scale wars with empire building, massive destruction and loads of casualties.

What is your favorite game with your favorite method of play?

Boardgame- World in Flames Final Edition with most addons and optional rules.

Operational, Strategic or tactical?

All of the above. Fortress Europa and Russian Campaign are favorite operational.

Well to answer the offered question.. "Are wargamers changing?"

Well I'm not 15 any more.

Once I might sit for 5 hours straight for a wargame. You can forget that now. I'm lucky to put in more than 30 minutes in a row.

I don't mind designs that accommodate that limitation. I like waking in the morning, and playing 5 or 6 turns from 5 or 6 on going maps from Battle Academy. A turn can last an entire 2 minutes of effort I'm either doing well, or groaning and not doing well in the current game

It doesn't matter the scope of the game's setting though. I can enjoy a turn of Panzer Corps just as easily as a turn of Strategic Command. But the complexity matters. Given a choice of a turn of War in the East, or doing some housework, I'm liking doing the housework

I have recently mastered playing Steel Panthers 3 through dosbox and just the other day got to say hello to V4Victory. Or rather, I was able to ask nicely for my computer buddy to help me figure out how to get them to run

I am not sure what device is the best device choice. But I do laugh at the idea a PC automatically trumps another choice. Yeah whatever ya dinosaur. I do have to wonder though if my love of tablet over laptop was logical. Tech envy is a pain.

There is a small chance, I miiiiight find myself in a house of my own, and with reeeeeasonable proximity to an old ASLer buddy such I might get to actually play some honest to goodness board game wargames. That would so totally rock.

But currently the biggest change this wargamer is dealing with, is age

If this hobby continues to scorn playable over monstrosity mega designs it is just a matter of time till we age sufficiently that the hobby dies off. Wargaming isn't dying, but wargamers will eventually.

Are wargamers changing? Well I was born a man but always felt that I.... oh sorry, you mean in gaming tastes?

Well I think a quick recap of the games I play probably confirms my preferred game type:

World In Flames, Civilisation II and IV, CTGW and Rome TW.

These come on the back of the likes of Risk, Diplomacy, TSR's World Aflame (iirc) and SPI's ETO and PTO.

I've always preferred big picture, grand strategic as opposed to individual battle (I make an excuse for Waterloo though).

So I think it's fair to say my taste has never changed.

I find interface, ease of use and playability to be a lot more important as I've grown older and have less free time on my hands, which isn't to say that I don't play the big, complex games anymore, they just have a tendency to fall to the wayside until I really take the time to learn them and everything clicks well enough that I can move through the game easily. It's just that if the game is more like Unity of Command than War in the East, the clicking part happens much faster.

Wargamers will always refine their tastes in games as they grow older.

But wargames are definitely changing. I grew up with games that worked by cross-referencing a die roll with a printed table. Then I had to read 10 or 12 pages of rule book. Now I can only play War in the East if I can absorb 382[:@] pages of game manual.

I always thought C in Cs had staff officers to deal with the fine details. [:)]

We need more command and control games like Command Ops and Norbsoft's Civilwar series. Spartan and Troy were pretty good at it too but they were empire builders. As I get older I often want to do less and less. Even though it would be kewl to do it with 1000 units and just command a small operation in a specific part of the war. Kinda like the movie: Big Red One. I'd like to be part of the war but not really be Ike. or Church(is it one h or two?)hill. Wish Matrixgames and Slitherine hadn't lost Panther games dev Arjuna he really knew how to make games for us older folk.

Agreed. I also don't enjoy the way games like Civilisation 5 try to force me to conform to "realistic" behaviour, unlike the early Civilisation games that let me enjoy myself wiping out the AI factions by stamping all over their phalanxes with my mechanised forces.

Cmon now don't you remember the spear units defeating the tiger tanks? [:D] or the Ironclads beating modern day battleships?

PC War games are enjoyable. I own many and play few of them...

However War gaming with Board Games is where it is at for me.

A friend and I just finished a long campaign (1939-1945) in Unconditional Surrender! World War II Europe and are now starting up The Mighty Endeavor second edition. [:)]

I have. I still like wego/ugo/rts/fps - and so on.

I like larger text in the option menus, so I don't have to wear my glasses [:o]

Well I was born when Eisenhower had recently been elected in USA!
There were many WW2 vets all around who were in their mid 30's.
The war had ended recently and was very much in memory, except among us children.
I was named after three relatives who never came home.
This was viewed as sad but inevitable.
I no longer get excited by cars with "fins" but I still dream of growing up and
killing "commies" (zombies, aliens, orcs..inhuman things) like my Dad.
The world has changed and although I am very immature for my age I have changed as well.
I don't like games with bad or poorly designed graphics or games that you
need an 11 year old on hand to interpret.
