One thing that might help and save everyone some time on OOBs for any navy...do a search of wiki. It has tons of info on navies and specific ships. Maybe not 100% accurate, but sometimes the sources they list are very valuable.

Try to get Conway's 1947-1995, is a prime for it. Later you did determine the possible active ships from Conway's (i.e., excluying in bulk those deleted, sunk or transfered previously to 1965), you can match boat by boat service history on Wikipedia (some weeks I'm doing a similar labour with post-war Fleet submarine conversions, Gato, Balao, Tench and others, to SSK-I, SSK-II, Fleet Snorkels, simple "Streamlined Fleets", and the many Guppy variants).

My count from the Conway's data: Some 45 Fletchers in active in USN in 1965, including training ships. Some 18 of them with Weapon Alpha.

And also here you can find some support, but also with the painful work of perousing ship by ship (I use usually navsource.org for details with photo evidence basically relatives to when concrete radars or CIWS or other systems were installed in concrete ships. But beware, I also find some photos are bad dated, as example on images of many Knox-class FF, dates as in the earlier 1990s when were clearly taked in the late 1970s or early 1980s).
