Naval Formations

Post by Flef »

I'm trying to build a scenario in which a carrier formation has to stop another carrier formation. but I do not know what's carrier formation.

Does anybody has some literacy about how carrier groups are constituted in the US, the british royal navy, the French National Navy, USSR (or Russia) and China?

I also need some schemes/drawing/pictures to understand how the ship are placed to ensure the safety of the aircraft carrier. I would like to make something realistic, at least plausible.

Based on what i've picked up over the years, though I'm sure there are some Naval Vets around who can dive deeper.
U.S.
1 or 2 SSN
1-2 Cruisers
a Destroyer Squadron of 2-3 Burke's
A combined ammunition, oiler and supply ship

Have a read amongst this lot, you probably won't find your answer, but you might do, but there's enough reading material to take your mind off what you want to know for a while:-

Here are a few links I have found on the subject...

The Carrier Strike Group

Carrier Strike Group

Carrier Group Tactics

I think you should be able to extrapolate from the descriptions how these groups are formed and work, at least US ones. I don't think any other country actually use standardized carrier groups in the same way.

Hi Folks,

I'm still messing with Operation eldorado Canyon - among other things...

Here is a realistic US Carrier Battle Group form the mid 80's...

CV-66 USS America (Aircraft Carrier)
CG-19 USS Dale (Guided Missile Cruiser)
CG-47 USS Ticonderoga (Guided Missle Cruiser)
DD-969 USS Peterson (Destroyer)
DDG-37 USS Farragut (Guided Missile Destroyer)
DDG-41 USS King (Guided Missile Destroyer)
FF-1068 USS Vreeland (Frigate)
FF-1088 USS Aylwin (Frigate)
FF-1094 USS Pharris (Frigate)
FFG-40 USS halyburton (Guided Missle Frigate)

Regards,
Scott

Here are some discussions on the subject:

Scottb613: I think that your CVBG composition is good except for the Knox class FF's. Yes they did join CVBG's but their speed was a hindrance, generally they would only be with the CVBG when the AO/AOR was within the group, when that ship left the group the FF would escort it. I would replace your 3x Knox class with one FFG. If the AO/AOR is in the group add a Knox. There are probably dozens of examples where this can be proven wrong but from what I've read on the subject the Knox was used for everything but actual CV escort, even if it was part of the DESRON which had the task.

If your looking for current carrier strike groups I have put together the 2013 groups as an import.

Currently working on doing imports for the current strike groups since a few have changed this year.
