2nd Reich’s 3 Fatal Mistakes

Post by decaro »

from The American Spectator:

"In the years leading up to 1914, many in the German high command thought a war more or less like World War One was inevitable—and when the war came, Germany almost won it. So how did the Second Reich end up losing? There were three key reasons.

"The first might seem counterintuitive, given many people’s image of Germany as a belligerent power ..."

Yeah that linky didn't work either [:'(] must be because it's deeplinked oh well. Was tempted to do a copy/paste of the article but not sure if that's allowed or not. So instead go to the Spectator and look for ; THE SECOND REICH’S THREE FATAL MISTAKES.

Kind of wish the Reich would have won. We probably would not have to deal with spambots..

Kind of wish the Reich would have won.

It is not difficult to imagine a situation where Germany would have won. Not wanting to risk their costly High Seas Fleet (which actually could not stay at sea for much over three days), they withdrew it to the safety of their bases at the end of July 1914. Had they instead contested control of the North Sea, Britain would not have sent the whole of the British Expeditionary Force to France. The lack of those divisions would very likely have led to a German victory at the Marne, and the fall of Paris.

And then, would the world look worse today, or better? No shipping of Lenin to Russia, so no Soviet Union (and likely no communist China), no rise of Hitler, no Holocaust, no development of nuclear weapons. And without the tremendous cost in blood and treasure of the two world wars, the sun might indeed never have set on the British Empire.

Lose the North Sea, gain the world?
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?
