War Movies

Post by Symon »

Speaking of of War Movies, I had a few things cooking in sidebar while I was working, and what should come up but "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon". Needless to say, I put a full stop on everything else and watched this. Holy Mary, Mother of Pearl !! Ben Johnson could ride couldn't he? Woof !!

GREAT Film! It was one of my Father's favorites.

Many people say that 'the Searchers' was Wayne's finest work. Never really agreed with that.

The boys and I watched 'They Were Expendable' just a couple of weeks back. They loved it. Also watched 'In Harm's Way.'

Got so jazzed, I spooled up Fort Apache and Rio Grande for after dinner. Going to be a long night.

Don't think it was part of John Ford's paradigm, but his Cavalry Trilogy is, in my mind, one of the finest examples, in film, of small unit interaction and cohesion, and the study of small unit command.

Just sayin. JWE

The bit about "The Searchers" is he was as far as he went from his regular character, and he did an excellent job of it. Your best work isn't necessarily the best movie you were in. Which was the best movie is another discussion. When discussing JW, "True Grit" must be part of the conversation.

"The Searchers" was a Tragedy. One of the best, if not the best Western Tragedy. Could have been written by Euripides.

Of course, the undisputed greatest Western was "The Beast of Hollow Mountain". Just kidding.

"Jeremiah Johnson" is favorite of mine. Not really a classic western though.

Switched the telly on last week and watched the end of a cowboy I had last seen 50+ years back at the kiddies afternoon cinema. The name was Ghost Rider and found a clip. Now that's a film, beats any of you modern rubbish.... or have I been having to many of them.

I read The Searchers before watching the movie. Great book. Great movie. I liked the book better.

Of the John Wayne movies I've seen, I liked Big Jake and Rio Bravo the best.

Lonely are the Brave. An underrated gem. Watch Kirk Douglas get his ass kicked by a one armed man..

Always enjoy both of those. Granted the bathtub battle scenes are a bit funny but the storyline and acting ... yeah ... really good.

The book is always better. Read "Final Countdown" before the movie came out. The movie was not that good compared to the book....GP

I lucked out and saw the movie first. The book was just icing on the cake. I have the Final Countdown theme as music for AE.

Of course Spielberg was just using Peter Benchley's book for a not so great movie compared to the book it was really based on: One of the greatest novels in any language: Moby Dick

Of course, Moby Dick survives in the book. Spielberg didn't want to have a happy ending like that [:'(]
