Lost Pearl Harbor Footage

Post by rjopel »

WWII - Lost Pearl Harbor Footage (low res)
The original footage has since been lost, and the poor quality of this footage is due to the fact that it is a copy. Among the many valuable portions of this footage are shots of USS Nevada (BB-36) underway and firing back at Japanese aircraft, USS Oglala (CM-4) rolling over and sinking, and USS St. Louis underway (CL-4). Naval History and Heritage Command, Photographic Section, UM-10.

Interesting footage, though CL-4 was the Omaha and she wasn't at Pearl Harbor. They probably meant CL-49.

Someone got some previously classified photos of Pearl Harbor taken during the recovery effort. I believe they were part of a newspaper story that got classified because the US didn't want the Japanese to know how much damage they did. It showed the ingenious techniques used to raise the sunk battleships.

I never thought that doing an AAR would be so time consuming and difficult.

It's tragic that the original footage was lost! Great film.
