That's amazing, I remember when the film came out and marveled back then how they got those planes for the movie....

Interesting story. It sounds like that stunt pilot got shafted back in 1969, but it turned out to be quite a good investment in the long run.

And these are real BF-109 designs (Spanish built copies)... and not your typical T-6 Texan with make-up

Hispano Buchons. The Merlins were Spanish built as well, but Rolls Royce were not thrilled with the production quality of the licence built Spanish engines and insisted they were painted blue to differentiate thm from 'real' Merlins (including the Packard built ones).

No these were just the 109's & a Spitfire. I assume the HE111 were actual Spanish AF planes at the time of the movie since it was involved in the filming but would have been scrapped/surplused long ago. I think there's a couple of ex SAF HE111's flying in Europe

The branch of the Commemorative Air Force in Arizona had one of these Spanish He-111s, though it crashed a few years ago.

There were no Do-17s in the movie. Only one Do-17 exists in the world and it was recovered from the bottom of the English channel a year or two back.

The list of planes used in the movie is here:
