A Silent Hunter II Campaign

Post by KG Erwin »

In my first mission, I take command of a Type IIC U-Boat on patrol in the Gulf of Danzig. When war is declared on Poland on Sept 1, 1939, I have free reign to sink any ships departing from the port. Early on Sept 1 I see a large merchant ship escorted by a Polish destroyer leaving the vicinity. I launch two submerged torpedoes at the merchant and sink her. A third torpedo launched at the destroyer misses, and I hightail it out of the area. The merchant is a 20,636 ton ocean liner, and I later find out it is an American ship. However, upon return to base at Kiel I am awarded the Iron Cross 2nd Class. Kapitanleutnant Erwin has his first kill.

For my second mission in Jan 1940 I now have command of a Type VIIB boat, and will be operating on the British coast. I start in Wilhelmshaven. My insignia is a green swordfish.

Why did you choose SH II ? Just curious.
History began July 4th, 1776. Anything before that was a mistake.

If this was SH III with the GWX mod you would have been court martrialled for sinking a neutral ship and possibly dragging America into the war two years earlier.

I am very interested in jumping into one of these and playing but reading about them on forums makes me want to stay far far away from any of them at any price.

It does seem like SH III with the GWX mod has the most favorable reviews overall.

Actually, SH II (modded) is a pretty good game. Playing submarine sims is a niche market, that's for sure, as playing these in real time requires a LOT of patience. As I'm a huge fan of Das Boot, using the Das Boot sound mod is a must. Remember, this game is 12 years old, but still runs OK on XP with the 1.1 patch. I use a number of mods that I acquired from Subsim.com. I DO use time compression, but one has to be very careful not to run into a trap. Believe me, I've been killed off many many times by a destroyer dropping Wasserbomben or by an airplane.

Serving on a U Boat was the deadliest job of WWII, what with 75% of the crews being killed. The next book I'm going to buy will be Clay Blair's vol I of Hitler's U Boat War.
