Suggested new feature: Collision

Post by Mgellis »

I wonder if it would be possible to eventually add the option for ships, etc. to do damage by running into each other.

Perhaps one way to handle this would be to simply adopt the following "rules"...

1) If two vessels get within a certain range (0.01 miles) of each other, they are in danger of colliding

2) A random roll determines if they actually collide or not (10% chance?)

3) If they do collide, all objects do 10% of their HP in collision damage.

So, if a carrier runs into a small boat, the carrier takes maybe 1 or 2 DP, but the small boat takes several hundred...not good news for the small boat!

(By the way, while I am mostly thinking of situations where warships could harass small fishing boats, etc. this would also allow for things like whales ramming submarines, sea monsters, etc.)

Any thoughts on this?

It occurs to me that one issue with this might be the Unfriendly posture, in which ships, etc. deliberately get as close as possible to an "enemy" without firing...but I suppose there is a realistic risk in such cases of having a collision. Maybe the solution is that there is only one role...you either collide or you don't and you don't keep checking for it over and over (because then you would always end up colliding).

Anyway, it's just a thought.

Mgellis,

I like it.

But it would need some tweaking to insure that friendly units in a tight formation didn't collide, and re-collide, until they sink each other. In fact, while collisions among friendly ships to happen, I'd say that wouldn't be part of the model. The two vessels in question would have to be Unfriendly or Enemy, and I might limit them to one or two bumps to avoid the AI locking in to a game of deadly bumper cars.

Doesn’t have to be a deliberate act either. Refuelling at sea can be tricky: http://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/weekend-wa ... -1.1438620

And even being docked in port has its difficulties: http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2013 ... rbour.html

And of course there is the fire or damage at sea issue: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-c ... -1.2573437

Not a good year for the Canadian West Coast Fleet, but it highlights the danger of non-combat incidents which can disable a ship. WITP-AE has a random incident generator, and I think Harpoon did as well, which applies a random factor adjusted by what the ship is doing to determine if something bad happens. In WITP it was a daily check, and I think in Harpoon in was hourly (not sure). Once something bad happens then another check is done to see how bad and what systems are affected. If I recall it brought out howls of 'that can't happen to my ship!' but was eventually accepted as @#$t happens. The danger of course is in smaller scenarios it could mean the difference between mission success and failure.

Mid-air collisions anyone [:D]

Could be a weapon mount called Ramming that is fired when the ship is very close to an eligible target in a narrow front/front-side arc. Unlimited ammo but damages both vessels commensurate to relative impact speed and angle, as well as immediately effect speed.

Please make it an user selectable option.

No doubt that this feature will spawn requests (demands?) for a DB300-BCE database including triremes so that CMANO can be used to model galley battles like Salamis.

Wow! This could be great. I was thinking about pirate ships, blackbeard included, against those monstruous spanish galleons on XVII century caribbean sea. Including some attacks on forts situated on the beautiful islands. Some british ship of line against recently born americans in XVIII century colonial USA could be a very interesting situation. Some ironclads against strange monitors in XIX century can be good too.

This nice addon can expands CMANO to interesting new horizons.

I agree if this gets implemented it needs to be a user selectable option. As a commander I should not have to worry about not colliding with anything, my crews handle such things.

Thanks,
