Central Pacific: Sigint entry for 2/22 reports intercepted Jap radio transmssions from Tabiteuea. Detected status of Tabiteuea shows no visible Japanese forces or activity.

Indian Ocean: Japanese amphibious assault and capture of Cocos Is. My current estimate is that Pillager has likely taken Cocos and Christmas Islands as a defensive rather than offensive measure – most likely to eliminate their use as Allied staging points near the DEI. Regardless… units of the Australian “Home Army” are now transferring to locations in SW Australia (Perth, Geraldton, etc) as a precautionary measure. I don't anticipate Pillager launching a Japanese spoiling attack into SW Australia. If Pillager had wanted Darwin, he’d be there by now – I had no intent of defending NW Australia at any point in the campaign as this area is a logistical hellhole for Allied forces (especially once the DEI fell in 1942). Jap 4th Infantry Division/C sub unit had been based in Balikpapan since 1942 (last reported in Balikpapan on 2/16/44), what cannot be determined at this time is whether part or all of this sub unit is on Cocos Is. Current status of Terapo base – 44K supply on hand, airfield service damage 29, runway damage 26. Four heavily damaged APA from the Terapo landing operation reached ports in Australia and now in repair.

Japanese LBA bombers raid Suva, uncertain from the AAR what this raid was targeting though it is likely Pillager is aware of Allied transport shipping operations into Suva and this action may have been an attempted naval air strike. In any event the raid was easily repelled by US CAP fighters based in Suva. AAR follows.

Summary of Operations 2/24/44

Southwest Pacific: Current status of Port Moresby base – supply on hand 599K, fuel 42K. Damaged LST in port at Port Moresby is repairing in pierside mode at least to an extent where it is no longer in immediate danger of sinking (flood damage now 81, all major) but it’s unlikely the LST can be moved out of Port Moresby to a shipyard (Brisbane the nearest available facility). Plans are to keep the LST disbanded in Port Moresby on the chance a spare AR can be moved there at some point in the future to make further repairs on the LST to where it can be moved.

Several transport convoys and detachments arriving in theatre from the mainland US.

Main body of transport convoy WP-147 (13 transports, 2 large AO) arrives in Auckland. Cargo includes 63K supply and 25K fuel. The two large AO were detached from the convoy for transfer to replenishment TF forces.

Central Pacific: Sigint entry for 2/26 reports intercepted Jap radio transmissions from Eniwetok. Detected status of Eniwetok shows no visible Japanese forces or activity.

Another 2/26 Sigint entry reports 7 JNAF AF Unit now located at Lihir (near Rabaul), this LCU previously located at Baker Is. This in itself a relatively minor event… though it could be a small but unconfirmed indicator Pillager’s attention is drawn into facing Allied forces in the SW Pacific. While this report indicates Pillager may have evacuated Baker Is (possibly leaving a tempting but minor target open), I’d be content at this point to let this trend (if indeed it is one) continue. The more he stacks into Lae, Buna and Rabaul, the less my Allied forces face elsewhere.

Eastern US: Transport convoy EX-68 (21 ships) departing for Australia via Capetown. Cargo aboard the convoy includes 189 USAAF Base Force, 96K supply and 800 fuel. As anticipated, need and value of the EX/XE convoy route (Eastern US to Australia via Capetown) is gradually declining as the campaign continues. Use of this convoy route will likely be completely eliminated once no further requirement or value exists for large-scale transport shipping between the mainland US and Australia, particularly transport shipping to Australia supporting SW Pacific theatre (the main recipient of cargo moved via EX convoys). Another factor (apparently built into AE) is the increased off-map transit time of some EX/XE convoy TF’s between Eastern US and Capetown –movement time of some TF on this route increasing from 25-30 days to about 40 days (this “random” increase starting in late-1943), not sure as to the factors in AE which determine exactly how this works.

Something else being looked at in future planning is arrival of Allied LCU reinforcements from the European theatre around 6/45 (most of these entering in United Kingdom) – pickup and transport of these LCU into on-map operations will require some form of an off-map convoy route, probably via the Mediterranean. A Mediterranean convoy route for LCU transport from Europe in 1945 is a likely successor to the current EX/XE convoy system.

Summary of Operations 2/27/44

Southwest Pacific: Current status of Port Moresby base – supply on hand 643K, fuel 42K. Some Allied transport shipping has completed unloading in Port Moresby and now departing for Australia.

KB task forces detected and visible on the game map off Hansa Bay (hex location 98, 120) moving on SE heading. Given KB’s location and movement heading, it appears Pillager may not be operating KB from Truk (which is NE to ENE of KB’s current position). One US patrol sub operating off Hansa Bay reporting several contacts with B6N Jill and D4Y Judy air patrols. Several other US patrol subs issued orders to close on KB’s position or projected movement path. Perhaps another shot at a CV.

Current status of Terapo base – 38K supply on hand, airfield service damage 40, runway damage 55. Allied ground forces now moved inland from Terapo base hex, approaching Wau. My initial plan had been to advance Allied LCU from Terapo with the intent of capturing Wau to cut overland communication between Lae and Buna. A revision of that plan (at least short term) may be necessary.

Summary of Operations 2/27/44 (continued)

Central Pacific: Sigint entries for 2/27 report intercepted Jap radio transmissions from Roi-Namur and Tabiteuea.

Detected status of Tabiteuea shows unidentified Japanese LCU(s), no other visible forces or activity.
Detected status of Roi-Namur shows no visible Japanese forces or activity.

Australia: Repair/replenishment fully completed for all ships in US Escort carrier force.

Repair and some ship upgrades for ships in US Main carrier force continues, expected to be fully complete in 7 days. Three Essex-class CV are upgrading in this layover and scheduled to complete upgrade within the 7 days, CV Enterprise and two CA (both US Pensacola class) completed upgrade and now rejoining the Main carrier force. CV Yorktown and four CA (all US Northampton class) were detached from the Main carrier force and began ship upgrade – upgrade completion for these ships extend beyond the 7 days’ schedule and they will remain in Australia to complete upgrade when the rest of the Main carrier force reassembles and moves out.

Transport convoy EX-58 (20 ships) arrives in Australia from Eastern US via Capetown. Cargo includes 186 USAAF Base Force, 90K supply and 21K fuel.

Summary of Operations 2/27/44

Southwest Pacific: Current status of Port Moresby base – supply on hand 643K, fuel 42K. Some Allied transport shipping has completed unloading in Port Moresby and now departing for Australia.

KB task forces no longer visible on the game map. No carrier air strikes from KB or reported contacts with Jap carrier planes from Allied patrol submarines in the vicinity of KB’s detected location off Hansa Bay. Only a question of where (not if) KB will re-appear. I have no planned actions against KB other than defensive measures. Most Allied naval and amphibious forces including surface naval and both carrier forces are currently re-grouping from the Terapo operation and prepping for the next adventure. My general policy in this campaign regarding KB appearances has been largely – (1) track KB’s location and movements as best possible, (2) timely and appropriate counter measures when KB appears in the affected areas, (3) otherwise business as usual. KB is a force to be reckoned with but it is a force with many limitations.

Summary of this game turn’s reported aircraft losses over all locations in New Guinea.

Current status of Terapo base – 38K supply on hand, airfield service damage 83, runway damage 63. Ground advance by Allied forces toward Wau has been stopped, given both the current situation in Terapo and the greatly reduced possibility of a quick advance by Allied ground forces to the northern coast of New Guinea to cut Japanese land communication between Lae and Buna. Current number and condition of Allied LCU in the Terapo bridgehead do not allow completion of the original plan at this time. A counter-attack by Japanese ground forces on Terapo is not anticipated and could be handled if it occurs.

My estimate is that supply is likely a significant bottleneck for Japanese forces in New Guinea, especially given the large numbers of Jap LCU and air units Pillager has operating from Lae and Buna. I’m starting to put some focus on attrition of Japanese supply reserves in New Guinea - the goal being output (supply consumption by Jap air and ground forces plus airfield/port repair and recovering destroyed/damaged planes) > input (supply transport into New Guinea). Pillager’s consumption of Japanese planes, pilots and supply in air operations over New Guinea have largely exceeded the results of those actions. Death by logistics…

US landing craft TF (LST’s) departed Terapo without incident. Barge TF’s (LCT’s) continue moving supply from Port Moresby into Terapo.

US Marine LBA dive bombers launch daylight attack on Buna port with mostly disastrous results, objective of the raid to damage port facilities and destroy barges disbanded in port. USAAF fighters assigned to escort this raid did not take off. Pilot losses in this action more significant than the loss of SBD-3 planes (current front-line use of SBD-3 only in US Marine VMSB squadrons, many SBD-3 in pilot training service). Many pilots did return to base indicating many of the 56 SBD-3 reported destroyed in air-to-air action (above) were likely ops losses. With the SBD-5 passing out of front-line service in USN carrier squadrons, a plane upgrade for these air units may now be in order. AAR’s follow.
