Experimenting with new markers

Post by rjlee »

I have been playing around with the map marker graphics; some of my custom experiments have been very ugly and terrible, and some have been better. This illustrates some of the better attempts. I will share with the group in a little bit once I iron out a few more bugs.

I've also tried to mod the counters but have pretty uniformly failed at improving them. This is my latest attempt (that is supposed to be 1980s US Army woodland camo pattern for the American units, if you're wondering). I think I may end up leaving the counters alone.

Are those little red spots which look like they have smoke rising up off of them casualty markers?

Yes, they are replacements for the little red and blue crosses.

I like the counters! I never did like the "3D" effect on the mines/obstacles. Nicely done.

I like the soviet ones which have CA in the bottom right corner, is that (or could it be) the parent formation i.e. 3CAA = 3rd combine arms army

Very nice looking markers. Do you have a blue version of the kill marker? How do you show breached mines and obstacles?

Anyway you could make the casualty markers public? That looks fantastic

1. "CA" is the cyrillic abbreviation for Sovetskaya Armiya, which appeared on Soviet enlisted shoulderboards (with the exception of sergeants major) throughout the 80s.

2. Yes, there is a blue version of the kill marker (you can see some examples in the upper left hand corner below).

3. Breached minefields and obstacles appear as in the screenshot below. The same breached graphic shows for both red and blue minefields/obstacles, of course, but that is probably OK.

4. I will pull together the markers I'm using and upload them soon -- I am still playing with some things (like centering the markers over the hex).

Very impressive work!

Makes me feel worse about my graphic skills than I was already feeling. [:(]

Like the new symbol counters. Though prefer the original cross. Also trying to mod counters is very hard to get right. Difficult not to make them to busy looking. Maybe some sort of texture might work...though do like the camo... Maybe a faint hammer and sickle for the Soviets.

Here are a set of custom graphics for the following items:

Map markers:
1. Minefields (red/blue/breached)
2. Obstacles (red/blue/breached)
3. Improved positions (red/blue/yellow)
4. Casualty markers (red/blue)

UI items:
1. Radio traffic (US/UK/FRG)
2. Airstrike (US/UK/FRG)

Counters:
1. US (woodland camo)
2. USSR (Soviet Army)

The map marker graphics can go into the /Assets/Map Markers/Custom folder without disturbing the originals, but the UI items and counters will overwrite the originals in your /Modules/FPRS/Data/American (etc.) directory. For your convenience I have included a set of original UI items and counters (AirStrikeController.bmp, msg.bmp, US-BGD.bmp, and RU_BGD.bmp) in case there is an accident and you forget to back them up.

Photos in the UI items are derived from U.S. government works that are not subject to copyright. The guy writing on the mapboard was doing so as part of REFORGER 86, and the airstrike graphics are all from A-10 range exercises from the 1980s (stateside, not in Europe).

Sample screen. I cleaned up the US counter so that camo pattern is not so busy, but still not very happy with it. Haven't done anything with the Soviet counter but that definitely needs work. YMMV.

NICE! Continue in this work please! This has really an atmosphere!

You could upload your mods to devs web: www.ontargetsimulations.com/?page_id=163

It would be fine to have all mods in one place ;)

Thanks for the map markers, rjlee. Love them. The original counters look too much like board game things, but these are great - they look like markings on a map! (With the exception of the kill markers, which look like frozen animations to me, so I too will keep the crosses, though the crosses are hard to see clearly for my ageing eyes, so it would be nice if something clearer would replace them - but something that still looked like a mark made on a map - but I'm not sure what that would be....) . Much appreciated.
