That looks a bit like the tripod mast the US was converting the BBs to in the late 30s. I think they were about 1/2 complete when the war started.

Bill,

Didn't the US still carry the range clocks even with the tripod mast? Hal

I believe the clocks were removed soon after Pearl Harbor, but I believe it was when the ships got radar and it doesn't look like that ship has either, though one mast extends outside the edges of the picture.

Fair enough, however this photo looks pre-WWII (meaning Dec. 1941) as the ship has the old style radio mast equipment. So I'm leaning toward British, the "R" class.

It looks like an IJN auxiliary of some kind like a seaplane tender.

On first look the turret on the bow looked like a single mount which led me to think of something else. On second look it might be a Katori, but the forward structure was larger on the Katoris. Or at least in the pictures I've seen. The crane amidships looks rather oversized too.

That crane looks too small, height wise, to handle seaplanes, but I am thinking mini subs or small craft.

Either the Ashizuri or Shioya

"The Ashizuris or "Kihatsuyu Umpankan" were underway replenishment vessels for carrier task forces. In addition to aviation gasoline, they carried lubricants and spare parts, and they were equipped with aircraft repair workshops."

On the money!

I hadn't seen a pic of these until I stumbled on a site with this guy's colored images. In game they seem almost an afterthought, small capacity tankers coming mid-war, but I've found them useful with the decent speed at 16 knots on short runs close to the HI.

This is actually from a World of Warships forum thread, but the guy has his own blog, mostly written in Japanese, and updated a lot. He's also taken down a lot since I was last there of the WW2 era ships, now there are more WW1 and very early ships there. Still very cool.
