OT-Warsaw Uprising

Post by crsutton »

In Poland today they are honoring the thousands who died in the Warsaw Uprising in 1944. Viberpol sent me the trailers to an up coming movie. One to watch with young adults, so they know.

Hey,

thank you for sharing that. Earlier today I shared a video showing how the Warsaw Uprising is honored every year: tm.asp?m=3667520

As for the movie, supposedly it's worth seeing (even some of the opinions by veterans that fought there were good) though unfortunately I do not know if there's gonna be an english version...Perhaps sometime on youtube :)

Here's the extended trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEA76l3tLzM

The trailer suggests a generic, polished, Hollywood blockbuster. I wish the makers of the film took a different approach to the Warsaw Uprising, and created something similar to "Idi i smotri" (USSR, 1985). Instead, the film caters to global audiences and their tastes, thus the makers Hollywooded it. I hope it is not another "Pearl Harbor".

If You don`t like Hollywood approach You maybe like this.

http://www.filmweb.pl/video/zwiastun/nr+1-31422

Movie English title is Warsaw Uprising
They use original chronicles from upraising, they reconstructed video, add color, and they also add background sound and dialogs (they read from mouth).

After that they cut it in 90 minutes story

Agree, from the trailer the special effects are over the top. I am getting a bit sick of CGI in movies. Not sure if the digital revolution has added much.

Thanks, Viberpol mentioned this film as well but I could not find the trailer. It looks to be a revolutionary concept and from the trailer look excellent. He tells me that they got professional lip readers to read the lips in the old black and white films so they could copy the dialog near verbatum. Brilliant.

i hope it will be good movie - like other polish war movies (or war comedies) - and it will not go with line as new russian stalingrad (2013?) which was total s**t, unlike older stalingrad (1972??), and need to say german one was very good too.

Hi all,
ORIGINAL: Yaab

The "Idi i smotri" (1985)

is great move but I liked more the "My Name Is Ivan" (1962):

BTW, I distinctively remember watching old black&white Polish war movie (60's / 70's ?) about WW2 Warsaw... it was quite good...

Has anyone else seen this film? I highly recommend it. One of the best WWII films that I have seen. "I Was Nineteen"

I'd be very careful about films from that era made in East Germany, USSR etc. Someone also mentioned old Polish movies about the uprising from that time and they are a tad better but still, there were certain things you just could not speak about or had to show them differently than they were in reality. Just as an example you could not mention Stalin's attitude towards the uprising, his role in its failure, or, in other war movies, say any word about the Soviet invasion on September 17th 1939, their involvement in starting WWII or being Hitler's ally or things like Katyn. Certain other things were totally blown out of proportion like the fairly tiny role of commie partisans in Poland made look like they were as a signifcant player along with Home Army or National Armed Forces.

Simply put, these movies were usually pretty full of communist propaganda and though they are watchable, you need to know the proper context to know which things the movie avoids speaking about, which it artificially enhances and which it straight out lies about. Sometimes the authors were not fanatic communists but even then you just could not pass certain things through censorship, same as you couldn't make an honest history movie about certain events now in North Korea or China even if you wanted to.

Anyway, what I'm trying to say, some of these things are pretty hard to see if someone does not know the details, just take these movies with a pinch of salt and not as a proper description of anything that really happened :) Or in other words, you can treat them as entertainment but by no means a proper history lesson :)
