This cannot be right

Post by vettim89 »

The picture highlights the launch parameters for a Paveway III LGB. That cannot be correct! I have read numerous accounts including first hand ones from F-111F pilots describing a very low approach with a lofted delivery of LGB by these aircraft. They would die very quickly at 10k over a IAD zone.

Am I missing something here? Am I looking at the wrong weapon?

Indeed, that's probably wrong.

You are correct. The Paveway series can be released in a loft-toss profile, most usually with a buddy lase (either from another aircraft or, more often, a ground lase from something like SOF).

Maybe it's a current limitation of the sim in being able to model the loft-toss profile? I haven't gain enough experience in the sim to be an "air expert" yet...

You are probably partially correct, anyway. It probably has something to do with the mission parameters for the specific loadouts not being implemented by the AI, as well. According to the dev team, this may occur as part of the TOT Strike Planner sometime late in the year, or perhaps early next year. To my knowledge, they have not suggested that it will be implemented by AI, though.

We don't currently have loft or dive-toss delivery methods, and thats why the params are what they are.

If the wider community thinks the altitudes should be lower to allow loft-like ingress altitudes we could change things. But please note that the chance of hitting a target with this delivery method drops sharply. Ref 1986 El Dorado Canyon operation.

I understand the particulars of such a delivery profile would be a bit tricky to work out but it makes LGB about useless in any setting where there is an active IAD. A F-111 of F-15E cruising at 10k feet/3k m would be dead meat.

Hi,

The loft profiles are especially necessary for those of us who are stuck in the 1980s. [8D] Cruise missiles in short supply or nuclear only, no JSOW or SLAM-ER yet, no stealth aircraft yet. If spending a long time rolling back the IADS with available systems (Walleye and so on) to allow high altitude operations is not practical, either due to time pressure or because the IADS is simply too robust, low level ingress/egress and delivery seems the only practical option.

Thanks,

I believe the Paveway III series was optimized for low level release.

In Command, because as we know, there are known knowns; there are things that we know that we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns, the ones we don't know we don't know.

Things will improve quite a bit with the advanced strike planner. But this stuff is horribly complex so will be implemented in baby steps over the coming years (!). Don't think anyone has done anything quite this complex for a commercially available product so please have some patience.
