Types of radars

Post by Figeac »

FCR (Fire Control Radar), Radar Illuminator, Weapon Director, Target Indicator.

I have read the explanation on the mega FAQ and understand what each of theses capabilities mean, but I have not understand how do they work in practical terms on the game. The illuminator radar cannot direct a weapon (like a SAM)? The FCR can also illuminate a target? Will it be easier for me to detect a moving target if I have a target indicator radar?

Thanks!

This question pops up at regular intervals... perhaps one of our superusers would like to write a detailed description?

Thanks for the lists guys, this is really impressive :)

But I still don't understand how this many variables works in the game...

I've modified this page here: http://wiki.baloogancampaign.com/index.php/Sensors so that each sonar role has its own (blank) page. If anyone would like to create a page about a sensor role you know about please pitch in by clicking one of the red links and creating a page.

I've written the first page; Radar, Air Search, 2D. Please pitch in if you can!

Here's a start:

Early Warning or EW is a radar that alerts air defense systems and may be used to position interceptors and/or pass information to SAM missile sites, AAA batteries and ship AD systems. Its main purpose is long range early detection with a secondary function of accuracy. The scan type is usually circular. A narrow vertical fan-shaped beam is rotated in a full circle around a fixed vertical axis. It is characterized by long pulse widths and low PRF’s. The long pulse with allows for a high power transmission and the low PRF allows for long listening times and long ranges. EW radars tend to be found in the lower frequency ranges and have large reflectors to focus their energy.

Height Finder (HF) radar provide altitude information and usually operate in conjunction with an Early Warning radar (EW), together forming Ground Control Intercept (GCI) radar. The EW detects the target, and directs the HF radar to slew to the approximate azimuth, where the HF radar begins to “nod” up and down, searching for the target. It is this vertical sector scan that is the most distinctive characterization of an HF radar.

Acquisition Radars-Typically associated with AAA and SAMS, they differ from EW radars because they typically have a shorter pulse width, a higher PRF and a narrower beam width. This combination provides for better range and azimuth resolution. The shorter scan duration makes the data collection much faster. However, they have a shorter range than EW. Acquisition radars usually operated at the higher frequencies to facilitate the focus of a more precise beam pattern.

2d radars can detect either altitude or bearing but not both. I tried to correct your page but it wouldn't let me. They are usually determined by antenna shape, and paired with their opposite.

Actually, the 2D radars in game find range and azimuth. The "Height Finder" radars in game are the ones that find range and elevation (altitude)

Generally (from an air defense analyst perspective; 17 yrs experience) we would divide SAM radars into:

Target Tracking Radar (TTR) - these are used to guide missiles to targets (think command-guided like the SA-2, where the radar tracks the target and missile and uplinks commands to the missile)
Target Illuminator (TI) - used in semi-active SAM systems. The radar "illuminates" the target, and the seeker in the missile steers to the greatest energy source (the radar waves bouncing off the target). Important to note that the TI is not used to detect anything; it is merely used to "illuminate" with radar energy. It's the same concept used with laser-guided bombs.
Target Acquisition Radar (TAR) - used with a SAM to initially detect a target to hand over to the TTR or the TI.

We usually classify Fire Control Radars (FCR) as those used to aim AAA, but the term is frequently broadly used to describe any radar used in conjunction with a weapon.

Thank you very much AFIntel! That's why I'm confused with the terminology used by the game, since there the TI radars can also scan, FCR can also illuminates, etc. And thank you Baloogan for opening your page!

NO TROLLING[:)]

Thanks. Moderator[:)]

You censored a post and labeled me a troll for talking about 2d radars.

In another thread you make fun of me for not having the time to create a scenario to demonstrate a bug I found.

Really uncalled for.

Matrix...? Sheesh. Customer support comes next if you keep this up bud.

This Trap144 is clearly a TROLL. He shows up in threads, makes inflammatory, completely unhelpful remarks, then refuses to engage in any meaningful way to try and find a solution to whatever he's bitching about that moment (and all he does is bitch, btw). Invariably, his attitude is "I'm not going to help you fix your game".

Fine. Then go away Mr. Trap, because the rest of us are trying to make this an even better, more accurate sim - not just bitch and moan for its own sake.
