Battleship in a small lake.... tactical or cheating?

Post by Pariah »

What do you think about building naval units in small land locked lakes? This is not meant to be directed at any game in particular. It seems like not a bad idea. I cannot fathom a real military building a battleship to leave in a lake. But, it seems there would be advantages when dealing with passing infantry and armor.

Is this cheap? fair?

The Battle for Lake Tanganyika was a series of naval engagements that took place between elements of the Royal Navy, Force Publique and the Kaiserliche Marine between December 1915 and February 1916, during the First World War. The intention was to secure control of the strategically important Lake Tanganyika, which had been dominated by German naval units since the beginning of the war. The British forces—consisting of two motor boats named HMS Mimi and Toutou—were under the command of the eccentric Lieutenant-Commander Geoffrey Spicer-Simson. The boats were transported to South Africa and from there by railway, by river, and by being dragged through the African jungle, to the lake.

In two short engagements, the small motor boats attacked and defeated two of their German opponents. In the first action, on 26 December 1915 the Kingani was damaged and captured, becoming HMS Fifi. In the second, the small flotilla overwhelmed and sank the Hedwig von Wissman. The Germans maintained a third large and heavily armed craft on the lake, the Graf von Götzen; this craft was attacked indecisively by Belgian aircraft and was subsequently scuttled. Developments in the land-based conflict caused the Germans to withdraw from the lake, and control of the surface of Lake Tanganyika passed to the British and Belgians.

The ships battled it out on the lake, doesn't that make them battleships?

BTW The afore mentioned battle of Lake Tanganyika is the basis for the film African Queen.

Yes Civilization is the first thing I thought of too.

Make sense? Well I usually don't build a Navy in Lakes early anyway. I have found that if you are in a reasonably good and safe position and there are still "enemy" cities on the lake that Frigates or Battleships to bombard (and maybe a destroyer to finish the invasion) can work. As far as reality, yeah seems kind of dumb.

I tried to like Civilization. But, seeing things like a medieval knight take out a tank just makes me cringe.

It could also be viewed as a defensive base built on the lake instead of a BB. Having lake fortifications is not unheard of.

But your question was about battleship building on a small lake?

During the War of 1812, the British built and launched the HMS St. Lawrence, a 112-gun ship of the line, equivalent to battleship in its day. Operating in the Great lakes, it could have sailed out of the St. Lawrence river into the Atlantic, but it never did, spending its entire career away from salt water.
Civil war? What does that mean? Is there any foreign war? Isn't every war fought between men, between brothers?
