Playing With Yourself isn't all that fun

World in Flames is the computer version of Australian Design Group classic board game. World In Flames is a highly detailed game covering the both Europe and Pacific Theaters of Operations during World War II. If you want grand strategy this game is for you.

Playing With Yourself isn't all that fun

Post by Auchinleck »

I of course am referring to Solitaire mode. (lol) I still think MWIF is an interesting game, but I've become thoroughly bored with matching my strategy as one country, against my strategy as another country. My perspective is, the game winds up being about as much fun as playing Chess by yourself. It ends up an unexciting, seemingly predictable stalemate, where World War II is missing something big. That something big is an unpredictable or even semi unpredictable adversary. I'm to the point where I'm considering shelving this $100 wargame, until when and if a proper AI is built into it. [:(]

I've found solitaire invaluable for experiments and developing underlying theory as to how to approach certain situations.

But yeah, as playing for fun, it's kind of lame.

When in deadly doubt,
Run in little circles,
Wave your arms and shout."

Playing every country in the world is not my thing. I'd be much happier playing the one-map scenarios, in particular Fascist Tide, solitaire than Global War.

and a little trick, simply pass with most of the major powers.

just make it a fight between 2-4 major powers....

like only USA vs Italy or Japan VS commonwealth

Yes, passing as a major is an option. But what about the US and the Commnwealth? They have to fight against the Japanese too so if I want to play mainly as Germany/Italy v the Aliies and Russia, passing as Japan/China is a pretty big omission. Japan can put the hurt on Russia. How much should the US and the Commnwealth take from Asia or commit to that theatre? those are very substantial strategic decisions. The Fascist Tide sceanrio has all that built in but I still can't play Fascist Tide yet.[:(]

For me, fun solo play involves beginning from a unique and difficult position and trying to fight your way out of it. Typically this involves loading up the Axis in '39 with lots of goodies and then activating USA early to see if the cavalry can arrive in time. Sidelining major powers or limiting their activity is another way to create new scenarios -- Italy v. CW is an interesting game if you buff Il Duce with GE + FR fleet assets and resources/production capacity.

In CWiF this is mostly easy to do. Without a debug feature, I imagine playing like this is extremely tedious or impossible.

I find it's amazing how well a couple of beers and my general incompetence manages to re-create the SNAFU's that history shows tend to accompany a large number of military campaigns. The fun comes when I switch sides and discover all the opportunities thereby created. Through this process, in my current Global War campaign, the CW has lost all the Eastern Med through to Persia to the Italians but on the flip side recaptured Paris from the Germans (with a bit of US air support) by Sept 42! Things aren't all bad for Germany. They are doing pretty well in Russia and U-boats have decimated convoys after, for some "inexplicable" reason, the Admiralty ordered all escorts in the Faeroes Gap back to port and, with initiative and poor weather on land, the U-boats put out to sea on the first impulse of the following turn.

I'm on my third global war game solo. I'm still finding things I need to learn or didn't understand.

One or two more times though and I will be ready to play someone else.

Opposite camp here. Yes playing games with others is fun, but solitaire allows me to go at my own pace. Since the Axis have the initiative, I just play a historical approach and eventually the dice create enough variability to either tip the tables or offer an Allied opening. You can always mix it up with alternate strategies.

To each his own I guess.

Currently playing against a human opponent using Skype and the option to share screens.
Given we just started a Global War, after some minor experimenting with the scenarios ... but pratically when one plays the Active Faction, shares the screen to the other, and Skype allows for voicecomm so that the digressions can be handled (interceptions and such).
We just pass the files to each other Impulse by Impulse.

I've been enjoying solitaire, but mainly because I am still learning the interface and the game itself (I'm totally new to WIF). Once I get it down, however, I don't anticipate solitaire being enjoyable except for practice and to try out new strategies. I bought the game for NetPlay, so I really hope that gets working soon. I can't wait to see some AARs from these forum stalwarts battling it out against one another.

I bought the game with the future AI in mind. I played solitaire for a month or so. Since then it's petty much
been gathering dust.
I'm patient, I know the netplay and bug killing come first, but I would like to see a couple new scenarios. One for the European
theatre and one for the Pacific in the meantime.
