Ship Classes. I don't understand them

Post by Sokar408 »

So I have been playing 2 games now, and I'm slowly learning. Infact my last game was dominated by peaceful races like the Secura, resulting in.. well.. nothing happening at all xD

Anyway ship classes! I do not understand them. Since there is no difference between what can be on what classes, and all classes can have the same behaviors (if defined so) and all classes has the same icons, sizes and what not, what is do they represent?

Another thing right there. Ship size. Does this actually change depending on how much stuff you put on a ship? I use very monotone fleets, so I haven't noticed any differences at all.

ship scale does change with more components added you can select this in the designs screen by what factor they scale by.

ship classes are for how the ai will use them, escort escorts ships around, destroyers are defensive, frigates are attack vessels, cap ships do a bit of everything in my experience.

you can choose whatever ship image you want to use for the designs in question. i like the purple ships for DW:U mod myself so my ships tend to be of those images.

Really they are just headings. There's no size limit for a frigate that's different from a destroyer.

You can make your escorts bigger than your frigates if you really want to.

It's just a heading, tbh the game has a LOT of these kinds of things implemented where the best course would've been to allow the user to do this for themselves - so they could also make as many of these headings as they would personally prefer.

Some of these ARE different - like the carrier is allowed more space as long as 40% of it is full of fighter bays etc..

For ease of use, I have one warship class for my games, and then as the game goes on and bigger sizes and better weapons and starfighters become available I just pile onto that warship design as much as I can cram for maximum effectivness.

Meanwhile it is still called Destroyer despite this thing being basically a behemoth uber death star lazor torpedo launcher with built in space bombers hangar.

The roles are purely for the AI to organise ships and fleets if you automate that sort of thing. This way, AI knows not to send your super awesome ships to escort freighters.

Also they are there for roleplay purposes if you do control all aspects of ship design/management.

+1 I'd love to be able to define 2 different types of escorts for example. One with ranged energy weapons, and the other with the hard hitting short range weapons like rail guns and gravitons.
