CV sorties

Post by Yaab »

Please help me understand CV sorties.

A sortie point represents on aircraft flying a mission. I guess it combines both supply for avgas and aircraft bombs. If an aircraft returns from a naval attack mission with unused bombs, the sortie is still expended, as the plane consumed avgas, right? At least this is what I am seeing in my games.

My problem is with the bombs part. CVs have torpedo sorties limit which is pretty straightforward, but what happens when a torpedo bomber switches to bombs? Both Devastator and Kates take 2 bombs instead of one torpedo. So, theoretically, if my CV sortie limit is 500 and I have only Kates on deck flying bombs only, then the stock of bombs on CV gets doubled, right?

500 sorties for Vals = 500 x 250kg bombs (each Val uses one bomb)
500 sorties for Kate = 1000 x 250kg bombs (each Kate uses two bombs)

I know it sounds ridiculous, but if you had an all-Kate CV plus fighters, and fly only bomb sorties with Kates, then you would have access to double the amount of ordinance than usual.

CV sorties are what they are - 1 offensive sortie is spent for each aircraft flying offensive mission.
IIRC:
1 fighter on CAP = 0 sorties
1 fighter on escort = 1 sortie
1 fighter on sweep/bombing = 1 sortie
1 fighter on escort/sweep/bombing w/droptanks = 2 sortie
1 dive bomber on search/ASW = 0 sortie
1 dive bomber on recon/attack = 1 sortie
1 torpedo bomber on search/ASW = 0 sortie
1 torpedo bomber on recon/attack w/bombs = 1 sortie
1 torpedo bomber on attack w/torpedoes = 1 torpedo

Updated for torpedo consumed in torpedo sorties

The manual says that "TBs will expend either torpedo or max sorties, not both". Is this no longer the case?

No change to the manual.

If TB armed with torpedo, subtract from available torpedo sorties

If TB armed with bomb, subtract from max available sorties

If no sorties left from pool, that ordnance cannot be carried.
