Distant Worlds: Universe not starting
RE: Distant Worlds: Universe not starting
Bought the game directly from the site after the RPS coverage, having the exact same problem as SimonSlater. I've tried everything recommended.

RE: Distant Worlds: Universe not starting
Have you created the exclusion rule and add "DistantWorlds.exe" to the trusted applications?ORIGINAL: Meteor2
ORIGINAL: Oddfellow
By the way, I was having the same issue, and after some hours I realized it was my anti virus Kaspersky Pure 3.0.
This is more an FYI for the company than tryting to help with the issues you guys are having.
Same thing with here with Kaspersky Internet security:
With the AV running, DW is not starting, the exe-file is classified as dangerous
(PDM: Trojan.Win32.Bazona.a malware).
The file is then in quarantaine and I cannot "release" it for use.
Every attempt to do so failed and Kaspersky stops DW immediately.
Disabling of AV brings DW to life and it works.
Remark: During download Kaspersky was running.
What to do now ?

You are missing either Internet Explorer or Windows Media Player. These must be installed and enabled.
You can check these at:
Control Panel > Programs and Features > Windows Features > Media Features > Windows Media Player
and
Control Panel > Programs and Features > Windows Features > Internet Explorer 11

RE: Distant Worlds: Universe not starting
Hello VPaulus,
yes, I tried it (was hidden deep in Kaspersky).
Hopefully I entered the right information, because I was not successful.
Without Kaspersky running, DW works !!!
Do you know the exact procedure to install an exception rule ?
Maybe I missed something...

RE: Distant Worlds: Universe not starting
Hello VPaulus,
thanks for the answer, but I have a problem with the mentioned "Objects" field.
There is no BAZONA Trojan in the Kaspersky enzyclopedia, but it is mentioned in the message, when running DW.
Do you know, what to do here ?

What's the version of your KIS? Is it updated?
RE: Distant Worlds: Universe not starting
I had the same problem of game not starting as well. I tried installing & uninstalling then reinstalling game w/ & w/o update. My install would say that .NET was already part of my OS & XNA seemed to install correctly. I even tried manually installing 3.5, 4.0 & 4.5 .NET (w/ 4 & 4.5 saying as already being part of my OS) as suggested in an earlier post & even installing XNA again by itself. None of that worked but in post #31 it said about finding the dxsetup in the game directory & reinstall dx & that worked for me [:D]
RE: Distant Worlds: Universe not starting
Hallo VPaulus,
Yes, is an up-to-date version, of course (2014).
The previous DW version worked without problems.
And DW is the ONLY game having such problems.
Any idea ?

In my case it was the Windows Media Player. I use Windows 8.1 Pro which does not come with WMP preinstalled. After I did what you suggested everything works fine now.
Great game by the way!
RE: Distant Worlds: Universe not starting
Problem with Kaspersky solved.
I went the second way by declaring the exe-file as "to be trusted" and activated this rule.
That seems to work.[:)]

Is DistantWorlds.exe in the trusted application list?
http://support.kaspersky.com/9732#block1
Is the Distant Worlds game folder (and not only DistantWorld.exe) added in the exclusion rule list?

This fix worked for me. I had to Enable both programs, and now DWU runs fine. I'm also on Win7 x64. I had a great deal of Windows crap turned off, partially because I'm running from an SSD boot drive.
RE: Distant Worlds: Universe not starting
Hey, I had the same problem as some people in this thread.
I also use an AMD card and Windows 7.
I tried a lot of solutions, and finally got it working by changing the compatibility mode of DistantWorlds.exe to Windows XP (Service pack 3).
Pretty simple, but it works now after fiddling with all kinds of different fixes.
The autorun screen remains blacked out though.
