Installing Distant Worlds Universe

Post by Somersault »

Hi all

I get an error when running the Distant Worlds install setup.

Apparently it cannot access my C drive or any drive for that matter.

Ive tried running as admin to no avail.

Uploading picture of error message.

I've bought the game on steam too but after getting
errors with the steam version I just bought the Standalone version and
now I'm getting this. Ugh.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure why that would be happening, at what point during installation would you say this is happening? Have you ever had this happen while installing other games/programs?

I've never had this happen to me before. I've
tried messing around with permissions within properties
of the executable. Funny enough.. it looks like the steam
version is giving me the same problem.

This is a picture of the files the setup has installed so far and what happens when I click on the distant worlds executable:

In your anti virus set DW as an exception so it doesn't scan DW then retry.

I use Avast and set the setup and executable as an exception and disabled it during installation
and I get the same error.

Some AV software blocks certain .EXE, why that's the case I do not know. Now, did you try to run the setup in admin mode? What's your OS? Win7 or 8.1? Try the following: Disconnect from the internet, disable your AV, run the .EXE setup in admin mode and that should do the trick.

I use windows 7.

I meet the requirements for most games.

I performed your steps and met no success.

That method has worked for me in the past but
this issue seems different in some way.

I've restarted the computer, defragged the HD
ran in safe mode..

It's really quite a doozy..

I had to add the entire DW folder (which existed as i had to install then uninstall then re-install) as an exception prior to installing using Kaspersky.

Hi Somersault

I would say this is almost definitely a problem with Antivirus getting in the way of the installation. Disable your anti-virus completely (if possible) and then run the installer as Administrator.

Thanks

So I uninstalled Avast(Antivirus) and still am not finding success.

However, if this offers a clue to the mystery:

When ever I try to reinstall DW without first deleting the old DW folder,
it says the executable is in use and needs to be terminated before I can continue.

I looked at my tasks and nothing related to DW is there.

Hurray!

So apparently I had an installation of AVG Antivirus on my desktop
and I didn't even know about it.

The sucker's gone and now DW is totally working. There goes my weekend!

Thanks all. Occam's Razor.. It's always something simple.

2 AV running is always a no no, unless one is set to passive and the other runs as an active one, or they will or could fight each other

I have AVG and it did not have a problem loading and running so it must have been a combination of the two.
Favoritism is alive and well here.
