GD1938 Game 12 "Fast game"

Chinese Combined HQ

Finally we are placing troops in the field. Both sides are taking losses, but we hope to stem the Japanese tide. We are very pleased at the support from the people of the United States. They will not have to actually join us in battle to have a big effect.

We appreciate all support and welcome volunteer battalions, committed to oppose fascism.

L'Armee of Attaques has been formed west of Lyon. This armee will centralize control of French forces streamlining the cumbersome French command. Forces have been transferred from North Africa to bolster the National defenses.

The Royal Navy takes to the sea and is concerned by near collisions with German U-Boat's perhaps the German high Command can send intelligence on Submarine movements. To avoid this situation.

Naval trials commence of the navies newer vessels with a emphasis on gunnery and the testing of the new radar and sonar technologies.

Very close to equal losses in China this month. Our forces pulled back, but no cities were lost or gained.

China is committed to retaking our land. We have many factions, with different goals, but all want China for the Chinese. This includes Hong Kong, where we invite negotiations for a compensated turnover, one that is not too far in the future. Chinese blood is being shed, and we want a united land for our children.

Washington : February 1928

The United States government has begun a massive (expensive) education campaign to alert the American people to the dangers about in the world.

America does not want the balance of power overturned, and when the people are ready we will actively enter the world political system again.

The Monroe doctrine is very much in effect and all nations are warned that the USA will take any encroachments on the Western Hemisphere very seriously.

"This includes Hong Kong, where we invite negotiations for a compensated turnover"

The United Kingdom is alarmed by this statement, Hong Kong was legally leased to the UK until 1999, it is hoped in these dark times that China will honor its international legal commitments.

Washington : February 1938 (note, the previous communique was mis-dated.)

The United States certainly supports "legal commitments". However the American's have a strong affection for the brave Chinese, and there is a lingering distaste for the concept of Empire.

The government of the United States of America would would recommend careful consideration of the situation. There is no need for haste, but the Chinese phrase "not too far in the future" sounds fair.

Who knows what "dark times" will bring?

The German Marineministerium announces the development of a new type of submarines. First test have been made and are regarded as successful. The subs have now returned to their bases.

(There is no need to show up in the Atlantic in this peaceful times. Germany needs fuel for other purposes. However, it was interesting to see that the German subs had been spotted. The sub commanders will be aware of the abilities of the British navy.)

Diplomats say that the Emperor of Japan made a remark at dinner that he regards Hongkong as natural belonging of China, despite of any contracts that had been signed in passed times by politicians convinced with British pound notes.

"not too far in the future"

As long as this means 1999 the UK has no concerns if it does not then we do.

The Japanese support for the Chinese change in policy towards Hong Kong must be treated with a large pinch of salt. This is a nation to our knowledge who are engaged in a war of conquest on the Chinese mainland. Unless a peace has been agreed between China and Japan. Otherwise we assume that if Hong Kong is returned to China Japan will be on hand to snatch Hong Kong from China.

Chinese Combined HQ
March 1938

The conflict in China proceeds at a very slow pace as each side tries to determine where the risk/reward nexus of combat leads. The very strong moral force of the American concern for China does make a difference even though the USA is still isolationist. Certainly at some point one of the nations will determine that battle is necessary, but just now a stalemate exists. Not peace, but a sort of ceasefire.

China continues to prepare her forces for any coming conflict. We are not a modern industrial state and are limited in production, but we all pull together for a stronger China.

The United Kingdom wishes the Chinese army success in resisting the Japanese aggressor. But reassurances are required regards Hong Kong.
The British created the city of Hong Kong and named the city.
It was a barren Island when the British arrived it was made into a thriving metropolis by the British with liberties not afforded to the Chinese on the mainland Chinese flocked to the British Colony.
Hong Kong's population soared to such a extent the British had to build barriers to keep out desperate Chinese trying to escape the oppression of various Chinese factions. Hong Kong is a haven not a colonial bastion. Britain will if necessary go to war to protect the citizens of Hong Kong. As is its international obligation.

Holland Joins the Allies looking for safety in a rearming and dangerous world.

The United Kingdom reinforces Hong Kong and increases strength on the Chinese Indian Border. The United Kingdom will not be caught unawares if China launches a anti colonial attack.

Chinese Combined Command

China continues a low intensity battle with the Japanese.

We are remarkably weak, so it gives us great pleasure to get a favorable review from Great Britain. Preparedness is always wise, and we commend the British for watching their flanks. It will come in handy in the event of war with the power in the Far East which really is a Power.

Recently at dinner the emperor of Japan made a small remark about Britain and France. The Europeans would never understand the mentality of the Asian people. Their presence in Asian would be of no good for the Asian people. All the Europeans were interested would be to steal all recources they can get leaving nothing for the Asian people.

Next day the Japanese prime minister announced that preparations for the operation Autumn of Fading Colors had been finished.

Under code name Autumn of Fading Colors the attack on French colonies has been launched. Japanese naval air and destroyers attacked British subs that protected the French supply center in Indochine. First Japanese units had been sent to the shores of French Indochine, while Japanese bombers flew first attacks on Hong Kong.

Germans and Italians launched a unprovoked attack on Czechoslovakia and Luxembourg British controlled Holland was also attacked as well as various air and artillery attacks along the western fronts. The French Merchant fleet was attacked in the Mediterranean killing many innocent French merchant seamen. None of the attacking Italian ships have survived and the RN is eager to finish with any other perfidious Italian vessels that care to leave port.

In a similar move the Japanese have launched a sea and air campaign in Dutch French and British Indo-China all this area is now on a war footing. No facility or city losses to report the British have not received Radio signals from Submarine groups in the South China seas South East Asia Command fears the worst.

Chinese Combined HQ
May 30th, 1938

A sudden violent storm has been unleashed. The French and British are suffering a terrible pounding, but in the Middle Kingdom, a quiet ceasefire holds sway. The Japanese have larger battles to fight just now. As pleasant as it has been for us to have the killing in China stop, it may have meant even more to the Japanese.

The situation is a perplexing one. The Japanese Emperor speaks of Asia of Asians, but his attack is in lockstep with two aggressive European Powers, and his nation's long attack on us does not fit that scenario. We are afraid that a truer view sees three powerful nations striking at a moment in which they seem to have the upper hand

The world is a dangerous place.
