Ginormous Klingon Fleet

Post by FingNewGuy »

Not to be deterred following the shellacking I received in my first Shadows Star Trek TOS game as the Kzintis, I began a new one. A bit wiser this time, this one is Hard on a 15x15 map with only the Federation, Klingons, Romulans, Tholians and Gorns , with me as the Kzintis. All the AIs I set to begin Distant from my start up.

SO: I am now 115 years into the game, am learning a lot and getting accustomed to everything nicely. I amuse myself by observing the rather intense war that the Romulans and Klingons are engaged in when I accidentally find the MOTHER OF ALL KLINGON FLEETS liberally applying the Monkey Stomp to the Romulans... I counted SEVENTY-THREE Klingon ships in this one fleet, which immediately brought to mind an important question. I actually saved and stopped playing to come here and ask:

What is the largest number of ships peeps have seen the AI put together in a fleet? [X(]

Once you get rolling with the game, try Extreme with Strong Pirates, as the AI has lot of spare cash to build ships which often leads to some pretty crazy ship numbers ... although I haven't counted them.

Of course most of those ships are pathetically small because the AI doesn't prioritise Construction research enough but hopefully that is amongst the changes that Erik has alluded to in recent posts. Erik has also mentioned Universe will have "cooperative fleet attacks against common enemies", along with the Shakturi, so hopefully so even bigger battles are ahead of us!

And as an aside if you like big battles I'd also recommend Star Trek Armada 3 for Sins of a Solar Empire, with the large fleet option and co-op against the Borg ... just awesome. If we have those graphics and sound effects came with Distant Worlds 2 ... shudders ... !!!

Battle of Archanis

Post by FingNewGuy »

Thanks for the response, Icemania. However, I recently had an experience (in the same game) which was a surprise given this: "Of course most of those ships are pathetically small because the AI doesn't prioritise Construction research enough..."

What is reflected in the screen shot is the immediate aftermath of the Battle of Archanis. (Dark red=Klingon, light red= Kzinti, green= Romulan).Going into the fight, Patriarch's Fleet was 74 ships strong, 13 carriers, 13 capitals, 18 cruisers and 10 each of all the other roles, and a good number of ground troops. 3 Battlefleet in Ciantella is somewhat smaller but essentially the same kind of mix as Patriarch's Fleet was. The various Assault Fleets are just collections of troop transports.

Jumped into the system, destroyed the one Klingon capital and a few smaller support ships that were there, blew the one defense base and attacked and took the planet. What followed next was the stuff of nightmares that I will just have to deal with going forward :( Wave after wave of Klingon task forces appeared at Archanis and before I knew it all I could see was a carpet of Klingon capital ships...also present were hordes of smaller Klingons as well- I stopped counting totals at 68: I am estimating 90+ Klingons and my 74 and hundreds of fighters. This was a huge battle and I am astonished anything survived from Patriarch's Fleet, as I was watching the Klingons hunt down the stragglers as they were attempting to jump out of the system. The Kzinti still hold the planet and I am feverishly redesigning and rebuilding lots of ships. [;)]

The AI does not prioritise construction research as highly as experienced human players and as a result my fleets always have ships that are significantly larger. For Universe I'm hoping the AI will give construction research a much higher priority as the benefits are immense. This should be readily implementable by the developer.

Battles are getting huge, the AI is now starting to give some grief and perhaps most importantly I am well into the tech tree and understand the technology aspect of the game somewhat better. This is still my 15x15 700 star map on hard, no pirates, independents cannot grow empires, and including only the Federation (blue...nearly dead), Klingon (dark red at top of map), Romulan (green), Gorn (salmon?), Kzintis (light red=me) and Tholians (bright yellow). Following are screen shots that will better help describe what the situation is.

Personal note- this is the Star Trek TOS mod (thanks!). The Kzinti began with a Feudalism government which, if you are aware, has a nasty penalty on Research; I intended to play through with Feudalism come what may...HOWEVER, about 35 years into the game the Kzinti discovered the Way of Darkness and adopted that as a governing philosophy and things got a whole lot better for the cats.

Here is what the three major powers look like so far. The Romulans have been beefier than they are currently but then again they have been actively fighting the Klingons more than I have. My primary goal has been to get through the entire tech tree this game.

My characters. Cherish your characters... take them out for drinks, buy them fancy cars. They can help.
