paratroops

Post by MuguNiner »

Greetings,

What is the rule to calculate the number of AC needed to transport a para unit?

Thanks

There are too many variables. Key ones are aircraft capacity (maximum load) value, range.

My rule of thumb for Japan early transport planes (small capacity) is one plane = one device

EDIT:
check this

Air transport is handled fairly simplistically compared to ship transport.
-----------
Moving troops from base to base:
a) Can't move a non-squad or non-engineer device with a load cost >9

Air dropping troops:
a) Can't air drop a non-squad device with a load cost >7 or if none are ready

Common for ready devices:
b) Aviation support - 2 devices moved plus 2 more if a/c max load is 7500 or more
c) Squad or Engineer device type - 1 device moved plus one more if a/c max load is 7500 or more

Common for disabled devices:
d) Aviation support - 2 devices moved
e) Squad or Engineer device type - 1 device moved plus one more if a/c max load is 7500 or more

----------------
Moving supply:
Supply amount is a/c max load divided by 2000 with a minimum of 1. This is removed from the source and added to the destination unless air-dropped where a random value is added to the destination.

Hi again!

I have a screen shot of a para unit. There is a load cost listed for the unit. How do I calculate the number of AC needed to transport this unit. The units load cost is 3156. I am going to assume that this means nothing for AC, otherwise two AC with a load of 2000 would be enough to transport this brigade. That can't be right.

One thing that I can tell you is that on aircraft, load is in pounds. In other places (ships, supply points at bases for two examples) it is in tons (2,000 pounds each). So a transport plane with a capacity of 2000 is 1 ton, in other words can move 1 supply point.

I haven't yet succeeded in figuring out how many planes needed ahead of time. It's always way more than I think.

In this case don't consider load cost of whole unit.
In this case, you have 280 squads and engineers so it will cost 140 C46(load>7500). + 2 for the disabled squads.
8 C46 for the 0.5in(loadcost<9), 24 for the 3"Mortar and 4 for the 3.7"
So it means 178 C46 or 318 transport plane with load<7500 (C47).

edit : All is now correct

Ok, thanks and please bear with me, I'm trying to understand this.
Are you saying that for a/c the load cost is one squad per a/c?
I dug around and found these photos. Indian 42 infantry load cost is 10. C47 all types, 6000 load, or 3 supply points.
How do I compute troops? I'm not sure where you got your numbers.
I count 318 squads of troops and support total. The special weapons and engineers have extra items to consider?
the .5 M2HB AAMG has a load of 2 * 8 would be an extra load of 16?
Am I headed in the right direction?

Thanks

I'll let Gaspote answer for how many squads on a plane. Let me clarify something else. The only place that load appears in pounds is for planes. Everyplace else it is in tons. So when you see the toop load cost and cargo load cost for a unit, those are in tons and match up with ships. But to put them on planes you have to multiply by 2000.

All I said was in the post of michaelm, I just made the calculations.

I'm sorry I thought C47 got a load of more than 7500 to get 2 devices, it's only one device so.

Yes it mean 318 C47.

Load cost of unit have no importance for plane. Just consider these 2 rules :
-Can't move a non-squad or non-engineer device with a load cost >9
-Can't air drop a non-squad device with a load cost >7 or if none are ready

...also for air dropping the unit to which the devices belong must be 'para' capable.
