Only 30 miles more to Kiev. Will the Red Army capture the city before spring mud? 3rd Shock Army under Leonid Govorov is reformed to fight on the swamps of Polesia and now consists of 4th, 5th, 7th and 20th Guards Cavalry Corps. Infantry units from this army are now subordinate to newly arrived 35th Army:

Turn 144 (March 16th, 1944)

Odessa captured, the SS division fled in fear. Spring is coming, but perhaps there is enough time to cross the Dnestr:

Chernigov taken, Hungarians did stand bravely but had no chance to upset Soviet plans. All-cavalry 3rd Shock Army performed excellently, by crossing the Desna river and advancing 20 miles into enemy held territory:

On the way to Minsk, Berezina will be the next obstacle. Combat is tough, a lot of Panzer Divisions in reserve prevent attempts at breaking through:

your losses and gains were equally impressive - like the way you keep on being drawn to the next objective --- ok that was Odessa, now the Dniepr ---

in the north it looks like you'll be able to threaten Minsk from the north, so that should help unhinge that German defense on the Berezina?

And so it should. I'm still afraid I won't be able to pull off Bagration-like offensive that will disintegrate one Army Group (no way for a big breakthrough, Germans do not rout). And with current level of losses (1200+ AFVs per turn) I won't be able to sustain such offensives without end. Also, with 2-3 hexes of advance per turn (very good advance), my railways cannot keep up (as should be) and I have supply troubles soon. This means that if the Axis will retreat quickly to Vistula-Carpathian line, I won't be able to do bad things to them for a very long time. Once again - I think it's OK and look forward to it. Brave defense to the last man in Belarus may not be the best choice for the Axis. They have to defend but also recognize the moment when it's too dangerous to stay and pull out in organized manner to save their army for '45.

It's quite natural to follow landmarks like big cities and big rivers. This is not an exercise in optimization, it's war and the troops must know that they fight for some important goals :)

The trouble is the armies going north of Minsk are one of the weakest, being members of the poor old Kalinin front, that got worst beating in late '41 and couldn't get back in shape for two years. Now all guards slots are taken and they have none. Meanwhile in the south I have very strong troops under one of the best leaders - Konev. Thus, both forces advance at the same speed, even though Konev fights with much stronger enemy force and in worse terrain.

In order to be able to post the AAR when not at home, I have to reuse screenshots made for the polish version of the AAR, that I write for my friends. They are 1920x1050, so less small-monitor friendly. Sorry for that.
