Kzinti Hegemony

Post by FingNewGuy »

OK, first off I am completely gaga over this game. Next, this is not technically an AAR, more a running commentary on how my current game is going.I have had the game for only a couple of weeks and am still learning the finer points. So-

I am a long-time SFB player; so while new to the DW-Shadows I thought I would have some fun waiting for DWU to come out next month and learn more about the game at the same time. I don't expect to win this particular game, and that is not the point- this is a learning exercise. If anybody even pays attention to it, perhaps I can pick up some tips as I go.[:)]

This is played using DW-Shadows and the Star Trek Kirk-era mod and the following are the settings:

1400 stars...15x15 sectors...Pre-warp start...Aggression: restless...Difficulty: hard...Research cost: normal...No space creatures...Pirates: Many/Nearby/Weak...Colony Prevalence: Plentiful...Independent Alien Life: Plentiful...Home system: normal...Size: starting...Tech level: pre-warp...Corruption: low...Independents can start empires ingame... enable disasters, race-specific and other events.

Victory Conditions- More a sandbox game but I am glad I did it this way b/c I can see more of game mechanics.

50% colonies and population in galaxy
67% private economy in galaxy
enabled race-specific victory conditions
Tech-trading allowed
100% victory threshold

(Automation is off on everything except ship design, but I frequently manually manage that as well and increasingly more so).

Kzinti Hegemony

On 1/15/2176 the Hegemony consists of 20 colonies in 18 systems with a Respectable reputation, population of 40728M (4th of 20), tax revenue of 187k, annual GDP of 719k. Cash on hand is 778k, cashflow: -23k. (A decade ago it was -195k, primarily due to obscene over-building of ground forces to combat the pirate bases). The private economy and bonus income are healthy. Resource situation is good, nothing is critical. All colonies are happy. On the diplomatic front, no empire is obviously really pissed at us.

Scenario

On 1/15/2176 Federation Colonies lift trade sanctions against the Hegemony; diplomatically, the Feds read as 'Angry- 0k'. On 1/29/76 message reads "Federation Colonies have invaded and taken over Alamedus Minor 3". Alamedus Minor 3 is 1.5 sectors from the nearest Fed colony and @ .5 sector from the nearest Hegemony colony. No intel on what Fed forces are like in the Alamedus Minor 3 system yet, although indications are from the comparison screen that Fed military strength is about double that of the Hegemony. I think it all depends on what they have in the system right now.

Immediate Reactions

Dispatched an Intelligence agent to attempt to steal Fed ops map.
The nearest Hegemony colony to Alamedus Minor 3 is Chalna Junction half a sector away. Dispatched one of my two major fleets (3xCapital, 3xCarrier, 4xCruiser, 4xDestroyer, 4xFrigate, 5xEscort, 100 fighters- 3238 firepower) to Chalna Junction.
Began construction of another fleet (23 ships) and 5 troop transports, also to be sent to Chalna Junction preparatory to an attack.

Game Story

Is it here yet? [:)]No? Oh well then...

14 November 2231
KHS Potent Hero

Admiral of the Fleet Laurus Dokari, commander of the entire Kzinti Battlefleet was reviewing the Fleet’s situation in his office onboard the flagship KHS Potent Hero. The Hegemony had been at war with the only serious Galactic rival that existed-the Klingon Empire- for two years now and Dokari was becoming worried at the overall picture. It was true that five Klingon planets had been captured compared to none lost to the enemy. It was also true that-so far- the ships of the Fleet were performing as well or slightly better than their opponents. Kzin’s relations with the other three major empires in the Galaxy, all of them now also at war with the Klingons, were acceptable. The leadership and crews of the Fleet were seasoning nicely and on the whole the Hegemony was conducting the war competently enough. The conduct of a Galaxy-wide war, however, was a thing that could never be considered optimal in any circumstance and there were beginning to be serious issues of concern making themselves apparent.

Nothing stresses the economy of an interstellar empire so much as a Galactic war. By the best pre-war estimates the Klingon economy evinced nearly twice the economic output that Kzin and its then eighty-three colonies could produce. At the time this was not considered problematic for the simple reason that the entirety of the rest of the Galaxy was already fighting the Klingons. Interstellar war as practiced by the Hegemony typically consisted of invading a few colonies, several major space battles and a great deal of raiding of colonies and various industrial and research stations in the enemy’s star systems. Before authorizing the most recent attack on the Klingons, the Patriarch had been approached by representatives of the Romulan Star Empire and the Gorn Confederacy requesting that Kzin join in the war. The leader of the Hegemony refused both times and for a very sound reason, that being that Kzin was in the process of upgrading its warships and otherwise incorporating recently developed technology. But within six months of the pleas from the Romulan and Gorn ambassadors Kzin was attacking Klingon colonies. Following shortly after that was a general incursion into nearby Klingon systems by almost the entirety of the Kzinti fleet, and the Patriarch signaled that he wanted to continue fighting the Klingons for a very prolonged period of time. It was at this point that Admiral Dokari was beginning to see in hindsight that the war might have been too hasty a move.

The initial attack had gone well enough. First two and then three more Klingon colonies fell. The Battlefleet won approximately eighty percent of the actions fought, though losses were heavy in those defeats that did occur. One problem with this was that the initial attack took place in many frontier systems across the Galaxy simultaneously- the Klingons were taken by surprise and were already committed fighting three other empires. The situation could rationally be expected to change somewhat after the enemy diverted more forces to face the new threat. It would be then that follow-on forces would be required to keep the momentum on Kzin’s side- except that there were no follow-on forces. The entirety of the Battlefleet had attacked save for two fleets held in tactical reserve. Now, due to losses taken and the necessity to continue to attack the enemy those reserve fleets were being called into the attack. This had been anticipated as the initial attack had begun, and construction orders for fifty new ships had been placed; the issue being that two years later those ships were still not yet in the fight. Dokari realized that they soon would be; in fact they were gathering at their rally point and were awaiting orders. The sobering fact was that the Hegemony’s ability to replace losses was going to place an effective limit on offensive operations- a fact he was confident that Supreme Command understood… the question being would the Patriarch accept this?

Another issue of concern fell outside of the military’s immediate realm but was of great indirect importance all the same. The price of several strategically vital resources had inflated to varying degrees just since the Hegemony’s attack began. How persistent this economic effect was going to be was currently unknown but it had, to date, decreased the cash-flow of the Hegemony’s war-fighting budget by eighty-five percent. This was not yet considered critical because the war had yet to stress the economy to breaking- nowhere close. On the other hand, on two occasions the Klingons had attacked with ground forces in far greater strength than Kzinti commanders had anticipated- or been prepared to deal with. This meant that an enormous increase in Hegemony ground forces- for both invasions as well as defense- was called for, introducing yet another growing economic cost. Along with the other intangibles and unknowns of planning for an interstellar war-what would the effects of enemy action be? - Admiral Dokari realized that these elements needed to be paid close attention to. He paused briefly from collecting his materials and smiled when he thought that he had just created a huge increase in workload for his strategic planning staff. Then he left his office heading for the Command Conference Room on the Flag Bridge of KHS Potent Hero to brief his subordinates.
