F-13 Superfortress

Post by jmalter »

The odometer in my DBB game vs. the IJ AI just turned over to August '45, now I have far too many active Soviet units.

I also received a USA airgroup of 12 F-13 Superfortress planes, & there are 73 more of them in the pool.

But what do I use this thing for?

It's listed as a Recon type & can only fly Recon or Naval Search missions. It has no bomb capacity or ELINT-Camera device, just a lot of MGs and an AIA A/C radar. I assume it's a 'defensive' anti-air platform, but it can't fly at night, nor can it be assigned to an Escort mission. Its radar has far less range than the PB4Y-2's ASG radar.

It's a gigantic Recon plane [:)]. Like the F-4 Lightning, or the Babs/Dinah/Irving...but enormous.

But a tremendous range. When you get those planes usually theres no Japanese base on the map you cannot reach.

I believe recon planes are all assumed to have cameras. Camera devices are used on non-recon planes to indicate they have camera capability.

The game seems to distinguish between cameras used as a designed part of the aircraft and cameras being used by the pilot or observer sticking his head out of the canopy with a hand-held camera.

This is most noticable with Japanese recon planes, with some light bombers having camera devices, but the dedicated recon planes lack them.

I'm no Alfred; a quick search failed to tell me what the camera device actually does, but I'd take an educated guess that it improves the chances of recon flights driving up detection levels. Or Symon might swing past and call me a "liddle kiddles" for having the gall to attempt to comphrehend the wonder that is The Code.

Almost on the money but not quite.[:)]

1. Designated "recon" type aircraft can do recon missions with or without a camera.

2. Adding a camera to a non designated "recon" type aircraft is the cheap way of telling the code that this aircraft can undertake the recon mission provided the camera has an effect greater than zero.

3. A camera on a non designated "recon" type aircraft type which has an effect value of zero is "chrome".

4. The benefit of having a "working" camera is that it provides a random 0-3 boost to DL after passing the pilot's recon skill level check.

5. The camera per se doesn't improve the chances of getting a detection, that is based on the pilot's recon skill level, but it will improve the quality of the data obtained (the DL level). Designated "recon" aircraft types have a built in code advantage (see s.10.2 of the manual) which is why they are not handicapped if not equipped with a camera.

See this thread tm.asp?m=2582638&mpage=1&key=camera&#2584571 for some relevant dev comments.

Think you are wrong here. Some of the very early Allied recons do not have a camera listed and most all Japanese recons don not. Camera equipped recons are significantly better. Usually just one pass will give a very high detection level. Maybe I am just imagining things but Allied recon seems to work better.

thanks to all of you for the replies. I was concerned that, w/o a camera, the F-13 wouldn't function for recon at all!

I am puzzled why the developers would have added a camera with a value of zero...

... And I will check which cameras are zero, so I don't waste my pilots' time

I only see one camera listed in the editor. It basically has no stats except "effect" which is equal to 4. I assume that because there is no accuracy rating that this effect is 100% accurate. Which then begs the question. What effect does this "effect" of 4 have. Does it just automatically raise the DL over the target by 4 in addition to any other DL increases that may happen with a non camera equipped plane?

Already answered in post #7 above.

Yes, at least on the scenarios I play, there is only one "camera"; ID 1853, which is the same for both sides.
effect = 4

Patch #1 changed the camera effect from 0 to 4.  Modders can assign any effect value they want but need to remember the impact of having a zero effect value.
