Cyclone Ita

Post by Neilster »

North Eastern Australia is about to be hit by a very nasty cyclone but as part of the media coverage I stumbled on this cool website that displays winds for anywhere on the globe. If you click this link today, you'll see the cyclone but you can spin the globe to check anywhere.

You can grab and spin the globe with your mouse and also zoom with the scroll wheel. There's a menu where you can select some options which include time, air or ocean mode, type of overlay and type of map projection.

That's really cool, thanks for sharing. I could spend a lot of time looking at all the different options. In case you're dense like me, click on the word "earth" to get the menu.

I've just been checking out the Gulf Stream on the ocean currents display.

I'm about 4000 km away, so no problems for me. It weakened a bit before hitting the coast and it doesn't look like the damage was too bad. Also, they were well prepared and the emergency services are very efficient in Australia.

The cyclone rapidly degraded once it crossed the coast. However, Cooktown was hit by it when it was about a category 4. It is causing extensive rain in North QLD, it has been very wet and somewhat windy in Cairns (nowhere near what Yasi and larry caused). Till 9am this morning one place north of the Daintree received 400mm (15.75 inches) in 24 hours. So we are going to receive a real drenching over the next couple of days. The great thing about the cyclone weakening was that we still have power. I lost power for 4 days after Yasi (some places took up to 3 months).
