How do escorts work?

Post by Rangoon »

If I have a Support mission set up (say, refueling patrol), with 1/3 option set, will the escorts ignore 1/3? Or will they parallel 1/3? If I have two tankers, and 2 fighters as escort, will both fighters launch and stay in the patrol area regardless of the tankers rotating their own time on station? Or will the fighters also launch one at a time in parallel with the tankers?

Anything else we know about escort behaviors? In the manual it says they will be air-to-air or SEAD escorts for a strike group, but doesn't explain their behavior as being any different than the strike group itself. I assume it has to do with which targets they will prioritize, of course, but wondering about other behavior. Will they posture themselves differently in terms of altitude and EMCON?

Rangoon i have found it much easier to set up a AAW patrol near or "on" the path of your suppost mission. Makes things easier to control, and the AAW patrol can be used for other things if needed.

Thanks, yes I have been trying that as well. Either using the same RPs, or between the Support mission and the enemy. It does get the job done, and, as you say, allows for precise control.

I would think escort could involve more specific algorithms, though, such as prioritizing enemies who are vectored toward the unit being protected, etc. And maybe there are such things, maybe there aren't. And most certainly this is something that will be developed and better documented in time. But what about now? Do we know much about escort behavior?
