New Scenario for testing - Northern Fury - Trondheim Express

Post by Gunner98 »

Here is the 5th instalment in the Northern Fury set (Cold War 94). This one continues the battle for Norway with the Soviet steam roller heading south but NATO starting to gather resources and hit back.

Playable NATO only.

Features STANAVFORLANT, a reinforcing wing of F-16s, quite a bit of Sub action, and a few surprises.

I have not had a chance to play this one through, so would very much appreciate any comments or criticisms. I will be on the road for the next month working of a laptop and limited internet but will try and keep current on your comments.

Enjoy.

Must admit I'd struggle to really test this, it certainly stretches my machine am afraid.
I got several hours in and found all to be working well, the messages add a lot, while the strikes were overwhelming. I didn't have a great deal left to counter-attack at that stage.
I don't know how well others have managed to get it to run?

Thanks, it may be a little large for public consumption[;)].  I'll try and trim it up a bit.  Do you recall what the AU count was?  Did STANAVFORLANT get into the action?  Appreciate the help.

Anyone else have a go at this one?

Think it went to about 2000, I can just about play at that but struggle to reliably save, or do anything to be truthful.
That doesn't really apply to higher end systems though so I have little doubt it is playable on a faster system.
I didn't get in any ships by that stage, and was rather hoping to reply upon the sub screen. These looked as though they could do real damage of course.

Thanks

This one should be the first one in the series that NATO can do some damage. Need to understand how folks are using the Subs and STANAVFORLANT to Stymie the Amphib assault - or not.

Thanks

Anyone else have some feedback on that one?

Thanks - The next two - Keflavik Capers and Plug the Gap are almost ready for testing.

a thought I had, if you wanted to accommodate folks with slower systems, this battle could probably be broken into three smaller ones. I had some trouble keeping things moving along as well, but I absolutely LOVE the idea and order of battle.

Won't be able to for a couple weeks yet, I'm on the road and don't have access to my main machine. Miguel has posted three of them here: tm.asp?m=3587065, These three have been released as finished, had some trouble with #3 and need to rebuild it. Trondheim is #5. No 6 & 7 are in the hopper, #8 was released quite a while back but needs some minor updating, its here tm.asp?m=3490771.

The next 4 are in skeleton form but I hope I can get some time in May to work on them.

enjoy

I think that I may need to do just that - not the way I'd prefer however. I tend to get frustrated with small scenarios as they give a feeling of isolation - which is unrealistic. The downside of this approach however is that I keep adding to the scenarios and have difficulty breaking them up

In this one I see 4 distinct phases:
1) Air superiority North
2) Neutralization of NATO facilities (dependent on 1 above)
3) Sub & STANAVFORLANT intervene to stop the Amphibs (dependent on 1 above)
4) The final Amphib push (or NATO's attempt to stop it) - dependent on all three above

Although I have a hard time envisioning any one of the above happening in isolation, I could group 1&2 into a scenario but that would be a bit of a repeat of NF 1 - H Hr. Then the STANAVFORLANT intervention could be a stand alone, just need to make some assumptions on the air battle. Probably not much need for the 4th bit because if the Amphibs get past STANAVFORLANT, there isn't much to stop them, could combine the two I guess.

My conundrum with this one is that the Amphib operation depends on air superiority, and that is exactly what NATO needs to fight for. At this stage in the overall battleset, I'm trying to build a feeling of desperation, where NATO is throwing in everything but the kitchen sink to stem the flow. STANAVFORLANT, the Subs and the Air reinforcement are meant to do just that.

My other issue is force tracking: Simultaneous to this action, the Kiev TG is taking on Jan Mayen Island ((NF4), and in 24 hrs the Varyag and Baku TGs strike the Shetland's and Feros Island groups while the Kuznetzov and Kiev Gps supporting an air assault on Iceland. So I need to keep things moving - or three US CVBGs that can easily defeat the Soviet force, get in the way. So that would mean very short 8-16 hour scenarios, manageable but rushed.

I will certainly consider breaking this one into two separate scenarios, just need to scratch my head on it a bit.

Thanks for the input and glad your enjoying the OOB and scenario.

playing,

Its very slow and ive had one crash in the first few seconds of play, may have been due to the masive missile strikes beating my CPU into a pulp [:)]. Not sure such a large scale scenario is going to work on my machine, i cant really run it faster than 1:5 as it takes 5 seconds at this speed anyways :-(, my machine is only 1 year old so should be up for the task .

Probably to much going on in the scenario, ill stick with it but its going to take hours real time to get the ships into action.

Unfortunately 30 minutes in and had to give this away, its just to slow to be playable for me, hopefully others can give it a crack. I like the concept though. Not sure Finland needed to be added to the force mix.

Thanks, I'm working out how to break this one into two scenarios. It will be a couple weeks yet as I'm away and much of my stuff is on my home computer. Does not bode well for some of the later scenarios I have planned - need to break them up a bit as well I think.

Thanks.

[:)]\ yep i was really enjoying the concept of reducing the soviet SAG's and am very tempted to edit your wonderful scenario and just delete all most of the northern soviet air assets but keep the soviet stuff to the far north :-)

looking forward to a break down if you take that path.

thanks for the fine scenario, shame my PC is not up to it

cheers

I'll take a stab at chopping it up in the next couple days and getting them out for a review, then polish them when I get back.

NF 5 will just be the air superiority battle in the north: Bardufoss Blues. I will apply the new 'silent EMCON' to the missile boats so they have a chance to survive. Probably only about 6 hrs long and a real bummer for NATO with no real chance to strike back.

NF 5.5 will be Trondheim Express, it will assume that:
A: ~50% of the Ftrs escape south,
B: ~30% of the Northern fleet missiles are expended,
C: Most of the Sov ships are located (I'll probably have to put markers in for the main groups to orient NATO at the start,
D: All of the Rft aircraft are in place and ready, the Jaguars will not have made a strike yet
E: The Norgi ships in the north are feeding the fish, those in the south have linked with STANAVFORLANT
F: The Sov SAGs have taken a bit of damage, I'll put one or two ships damaged and limping north
G: Bodo will be damaged and I'll set it up so that it will be under immediate attack

Hope to get something out in a couple days - no promises, I've got a busy schedule at the moment.

:D since I was one of those who asked, it'll be my pleasure to give it a test run. Air ops run differently now under 517+, and u may have to go back in and order the AI groups to fly the 'old' style route to get the exact effect u planned on.

I actually woke up with this campaign on my mind the other morning, and pursued the thought chain of it becoming something of a mini-campaign. Obviously you can't get the same force mix sitting in the next battle, but the general idea and feeling of it can be conveyed I think.

Will give the new version a try, and then let u know how it worked out on my over worked, under powered PC, lol. :)
