arent there some new big bad drone aircraft still underway - it could be one of those. i thought the US was just making its whole airforce into f-35's, fighters bombers and all (and if you ever play Navel Wart: Itchy Circles that was the only aircraft anyone has

I thought I had posted this already, but I guess it got lost. As it is difficult to gauge a sense of scale, we can only guess at the ID of the aircraft based on shape alone. Seeing the prominent contrails, it's obviously flying at the stratospheric level, so it could be very large indeed. So, I'm guessing B-3/Next Gen Bomber prototype, or the "RQ-180". The thing is, and this is apparently a big deal- voice comms were supposedly being monitored in the local area, and it was reported that voice traffic from a pilot was picked up. Now, I've heard it said that the Air Force is seriously considering an optionally manned/unmanned configuration for the Next Gen Bomber. But that said, an RQ-180 drone prototype would not have a need to carry a pilot, ever.

So gentlemen, I must submit that what we have here, is either a replacement for the F-117, or a replacement/follow-on for the B-2. I did consider a possible manned RECON-type, but figured that would be a hypersonic platform, and the above jet looks like it is built for endurance and stealth, not extremely high-mach performance.

Popular Mechanics seems to have a similar viewpoint on what the next gen bomber will look like. Profiles sorta match.

I will also add this; (and this was stated in the Deep Black article-) You don't see what they don't want you to see. If it is indeed a hitherto unknown strategic platform of some type, then this should be regarded as a partial reveal of something new that the Russians and Chinese are supposed to be afraid of. It's just a glimpse, and the evidence is circumstantial at best, but the timing of it speaks volumes. It's a large aircraft, roughly equivalent to the size of a B-2, and they flew it in broad daylight, at an altitude that would cause prominent contrails. They even used non-encrypted, UHF voice comms.

I really have to think this is an unofficial reveal, and probably is as relevant an event as any that have been posted in the "Ukraine" thread.

WiB have now covered it too, and allude to the fact that it was over an area likely to be spotted, and likely a long way from its home base. They also reckon part of the message is that it's been worth the funding at a time when the AF is retiring aircraft due to budget cuts.

That makes sense to me. My first thought was why'd they fly this thing during the day? The whole purpose of stealth is to hide from all sensors and we all know the eye is a pretty decent sensor. Either whomever flew the mention was woefully negligent or they decided if someone spotted it, photographed it, etc, that was ok by them.

Not only that, but they want their potential enemies to know that there are multiple numbers of them, and they are probably fully operational. It was a very ballsy and brash maneuver, and very much in keeping with what I have seen from the US government during times of international crisis. In particular, I'm reminded of the MOAB, and how it was revealed, produced, and tested in the days before the air-war kicked off in the second Gulf War.

Know that we can build this, know that we can and will use it on you. Be mindful of your conduct, knowing that we will bring to bear great and terrible technology to inflict horrific fear, pain, and destruction upon you at a time and place of our choosing.

If it is a message its more likely for the benefit of those looking to cut the USAF budget[:)]

Oh, I don't doubt that either. Don't know where this money is supposed to come from, but nobody wants their budget cut.

How do we know it's American and not some Russian, Chinese or Canadian reconnaissance asset?[;)]
