AS-2 Kipper ARM mode?

Post by AndrewJ »

Hello,

Looking at the AS-2 Kipper, the database shows it has having an anti-radiation capability.

However, if you try to use it against land targets (surveillance radars, SAM radars, AAA radars) the weapon simply doesn't show up as a "Suitable Weapon" in the Weapon Allocation dialog box.

Now the database also shows the weapon's valid targets as "surface ships" only, which is probably why the missiles can't be used, and this is understandable in their normal active radar anti-shipping mode. However, in their anti-radiation mode there is no reason they shouldn't be able to attack land radar installations. After all, a SAM radar on a ship is no different from a SAM radar parked on a hilltop. If the weapon really does have an ARM mode it should be able to engage the land targets.

Should these missile's really be able to engage?

Thanks,

Andrew

My God! We'll get on this right away[;)]

Probably just a data entry error. We'll take a look. Thanks Andy!

I do not find the information that the missile has a passive homing.

Most modern anti-ship missiled also have a radar detector for general search in case the target was not found with the radar in the area where it was thought to be. The passive detector also has longer range than the radar, and can point the weapon in the right direction until the radar can take over. The missile doesn't use the radar detector for terminal attack, however. So the weapon is not an anti-radar weapon.

It could be that AS-2 was designed without a radar detector. Honestly, our sources don't say so can remove it if its a problem.

Could possibly add a new sensor role for these radar detectors, so they aren't named Anti-Radiation. Should avoid any confusin in the future.

Guys?

Thanks [8D]

The AS-2 air-to-surface missile is a supersonic, turbojet-powered, low-level run-in, cruise missile with a range of 30 to 100 nm. The K-10S missile (Article 352), developed specially for the Tu-16K-10 (Badger-C) aircraft as weapon against naval vessels, was in October 1961, together with that aircraft certified for ordnance. One K-10S missile is suspended from the aircraft, under the middle section of the fuselage. It carries either a conventional or a nuclear 2200-lb warhead. The missile weighs approximately 9120 pounds. For guidance, it uses a preprogrammed autopilot for launch and climb, an autopilot with command correction for mid-course flight, and active radar for terminal flight. The guidance system combines inertial guidance during the initial flight stage and active-radar homing close to the target. The missile can carry a nuclear warhead. It has a CEP of 150 ft when used in an anti-ship role and a CEP of 1 to 2 nm when used against land targets.

Looks like a regular jet fighter-sized cruise missile to me. :p
