4.6.273 .Exe Error

Post by loyalcitizen »

Downloaded the updater zip file. After install, I click on the new icon in the Battles from the Bulge folder and get the following error:

CmdOps.exe - Entry Point Not Found

The procedure entry point _except_handler4_common could not be located in the dynamic link library msvcrt.dll

Same error when I try to open ScenMaker and MapMaker. But I can get into EstabMaker and EM.

I am using Windows XP and had no problems with patch .272 I have re-installed 3 times now with no luck.

Please help!

Yes one of our beta testers found this too on an XP machine. We're trying to get to the bottom of it.

Jim,

We have not yet converted the HTTR data and won't do so till the final pacth. For the beta process we are only focussing on the BFTB data.

baldbrother,

It maybe that your mscvrt.dll is clobbered. This resides in your system file. Here's a link to the MS support page that deals with this specific issue.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324762

Can you please follow the Resolution steps that it specified and get back to me and advise if this corrects your problem.

Arjuna. Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I need the original XP start-up disk. I have no idea where that is now. Will re-installing BFTB and the add-ons work? This error only appears with Command Ops. If re-installing works what update should I patch with.? Thanks again.

I don't think that reinstalling Command Ops is going to fix that problem. You need to find your original XP disk and follow the steps I recommended.

If one of your playtesters, and several of us customers, have the same issue then it surely can't be that we all have bad installs of XP.
Is .275 going to work with XP?

loyalcitizen,

there's a time difference of 17 hour between us and the beta-testers that use XP. This makes communication with them hard, and is impairing our ability to address this issue.

If you want to help us, can you post a list with the .exe and .dll files present in the Command Ops folder where the game executable resides? Thank you.

Sure thing:

PGUI.dll
stdole.dll
MSING32.dll
COMDLG32.dll
DSOUND.dll
VERSION.dll
WSOCK32.dll

.exe are just the CmdOps, EstabEditor, MapMaker, & ScenMaker.

I can open the EstabEditor, but if I try to load a scenario it gives me:

An error has occured:
System.Xml.XmlException: Data at the root level is invalid. Line 1, position 1.

That and a whole bunch of other lines of errors.
Thanks for the help and good luck!

Alti,

can you try and delete the following files:

[*] COMDLG32.DLL
[*] DSOUND.DLL
[*] VERSION.DLL
[*] WSOCK32.DLL

Once those files are deleted, is Command Ops working for you?

Cheers!

PS: You can't open scenarios with the EstabEditor, mate, only the .xml files in the Estabs folder.

Bletchley_Geek. I followed your advice for Loyal Citizen and Command Ops works again! The version I'm running is 4.6.274.
Many thanks to you, Arjuna and ALL the team for the dedicated digging and the Churchill-like determination to not give up in the face of adversity. Have five minutes off!
Cheers.

That's great to hear, I was about to post that our beta testers confirms this is the way to go.

Just to summarize, in order to fix this, Windows XP users need to:

1) Verify that the following dll's are not present in the Command Ops installation folder (the one where the game executables reside)

Comdlg32.DLL
Dsound.DLL
Version.DLL
Wsock32.DLL

2) If they're present, delete them.

Let me excuse ourselves in this one. This issue arose because we were sorting out our installer scripts. The Microsoft IDE updated the scripts - without us noticing - to the 'default' behavior, which is to include with the installer any DLL's the binaries require. The problem is that this 'default' behavior only works fine if you're building the application in the same or a better version of Windows the user has (that is, Microsoft "assumes" that everybody upgrades their operating systems at the same pace).

It took us some time to verify that these DLL's hadn't find their way to the Windows/System folder, which would have meant that we were effectively killing your system. Fortunately, that isn't the case and the fix is quite easy.

So, sorry about that XP people! [:'(]

Bletchley_G,
thank you.
I have three questions.
1. How do I access the the four DLL files (I have zero experience in tweaking programs),
2. When I reinstalled BFTB from my disks (with no upgrades) I left out my HTTR and Greece expansions. Do I reinstall them before or after the removal of the rogue dll files?
3. After everything is done (cleaning up and reinstallation of both expansions), which upgrade can I safely download and install, 274 directly or earlier stuff first?
