Is those supposed to happen?

Post by hades1001 »

First major carriers clash ever, is this supposed to happen? Less than 500 strike wave can penetrate 2000 cap and deal so much damage?

I'm using the experimental exe, 1.7.11.23r, I know the cap efficiency is tweaked and supposed to perform better.

Is this already better? Based on the animation, in the afternoon, almost no torpedo bombers were attacked before they dropped the torpedo, plus the amazing hitting rates, this is how much damage 500 Japanese carrier planes suppose to do?

I'm not rage, just curious, please discuss. Thanks.

Well the first thing to come to mind is the massive amount of ships in the one TF, also mixing CV's with CVE's isn't the best idea.

Other factors are CAP altitude, weather, incoming strike alt etc. etc.

Also, craploads of Japanese planes were destroyed, so it clearly wasn't without cost.

Such a result is well within the capabilities of the IJNAF when attacking escort carriers.

But why exactly this battle went as it seems I have no idea. You are not nearly providing enough information to allow for replies to be anything more than wild guesses.

Late game AARs have all shown the same results. No amount of cap will stop 100% of a big strike.

Strange that your have both Wasp and Wasp II in the same TF.

you are aware that the max no of ships in an air combat TF would be 25 anyway and there are more than that in the combat report which leads me to my next question if you know that a combat report shows all ships that
were attacked which can be in different TFs in the hex?

I thought the modified exe will allow cap to intercept bombers not just fighting the escort fighters.

But when I watch the animation the cap still only fight the fighters and let all the bombers past without shooting down a single bomber. That's why you see so many torpedo hits.

2000 caps not shooting down a single bomber before they drop the torpedoes.

My question is, is this supposed to happen?

You have left out a lot of information. As others have said, it certainly is withing the range of 'normal' depending on various factors plus chance.

Often the combat report gives more details than you posted (information about intercepts and so on).

What were the experience and skills of the various pilots on both sides?

What were the status of the various units involved - morale, fatigue, etc.?

What are the leader stats of the attacking units?

What other combat took place that day/turn which involved any of those air units and any of those ships or TFs?

What were the ammo status of the various ships?

What are the leader stats of the TFs, and the ships (especially the carriers)?

What air HQs were involved, and what are their stats & leader stats?

I am certain that I am leaving out some things, and I realize that you probably don't know all those answers. But you can get the idea of just how many factors there are to consider. Are you playing the AI or a human opponent? If a human, perhaps the other player stacked the deck as much as possible for this attack - all the best pilots, leaders, etc.?

to answer your question simply:

I'm playing against human opponent, and both Allies and Japanese ships, planes, pilots, commanders are at their best status ever possible.

Both allies and Japanese fighter pilots have 78+ exp.Skills maximum. Japanese bomber pilots have average 70+ exp.

Only a few scatter land based strike during the day, about 400 Japanese land based planes were shot down without making any break through.

I understand there are many factors to calculate the results of battle,

my question is very specific, and if you have a chance to look at the battle animation, is this suppose to happen that CAP don't intercept any bombers before they drop all the torpedoes.

I have the question, because I remember the experimental EXE note points out that this "not intercepting bombers" behavior is fixed/improved.

is this suppose to happen that CAP don't intercept any bombers before they drop all the torpedoes.

Absolutely, as usual depending on a lot of variables.

That your CAP was engaging a couple of 100´s of LBA strikes throughout the day might have been a factor. That the initial strike a/c were escorted by three times their own numbers in high performance fighters might have factored in as well.

In addition, a lot of other things probably have influenced the battle, but then again we are back in Wild Guess Country.

Edit: I am not sure you are aware of this, but considering the ammount of information you are providing (not enough) you should no expect to receive any more meaningful answer to your question except any possible variant of "yes...well...can happen...".

You are misunderstanding what was fixed. IIRC the issue was that a certain number of intercept passes was the maximum, and in very large battles that would be easily reached and that (intercept) phase would end and the battle would move to the next phase, bombers attacking the ships. As I recall the number of passes was increased, greatly elevating the ceiling for hitting that issue in the future. There is no and never has been any automatic 'fighters getting to the bombers', which is what you seem to be implying. There are battles where the escorts do succeed in keeping the CAP away from the strike planes.

You say "Only a few scatter land based strike during the day, about 400 Japanese land based planes were shot down without making any break through." and seem to think that is insignificant. I think it is significant. If 400 IJ planes were shot down, that signals to me that a whole lot more than a "few scatter land based strike" were involved. The critical point is that it fatigues and otherwise distracts and uses up the ability of the CAP to respond to later strikes.

I agree with other assertions stated above-particularly Witpqs' observations that there is a hard-coded intercept CAP number of 'passes' beyond which that battle element just won't proceed.

I don't know if anyone knows how well the experimental .exe file you cited above has been worked out. It could be that this experimental .exe file does only marginally better than stock. It could be that *all* the hard-coded 'kinks' have been ironed out, but that's the problem with new experimental patches-no one really knows exactly how they will perform or whether they'll perform to expectations until 'it' happens.

So, we're back to LoBaron's WGC here. Could be any number of settings others have touched on. Could be the patch. Could be a hard-coded CAP 'passes' CAP. Could be weather. Could be any number of settings that we weren't informed of in your initial post.

So I guess I'm providing first hand data for the community and developer then.

At least the tweak doesn't perform as well as has been expected.

A fully gears 3500 AC Allies carrier fleet will still get her ass kicked when a 1300 KB and 400 AC LBA moved in. The LBA was launched from the only LV8 AF nearby.

Image what would happen if Allies try to attack a garrisoned lv9 AF with 1000-2000 LBA, which will play a more significant role.

Another issue is the incredible torpedo hitting rates Japanese torpedo bombers can do.

I post a battle a few weeks ago when 300 Allies torpedo bombers didn't hit a damn thing when they attacked 4 IJN battleships.
Here we have 200 plus Japanese torpedo bombers achieved 40+ hits on Allies carrier fleet.

Somebody may argue that weather, pilots, dice roll blablablah, I have played the game long enough to tell them,BS, Japanese torpedo bombers are just 10 times better, with the same quality of pilots.

Just compare the two battles.

There's also exactly one ship that isn't a carrier. AA has "just a bit" of influence on the attackers. If this came from a real game it's a really bad example of how to play the late war.

Notwithstanding the 25-ship limit and the reported results. There's some mixology going on in the OP's post.

No, not really. You have provided only a little superficial information. Where is the rest? You haven't even provided the full sections of the combat report, including for example the CAP response portion of those combats. Nor did you provide the other combats involving those units. Nor a lot of the other information asked for.

You seem to be sincere in your complaint, but you are not providing actionable information.

At least the tweak doesn't perform as well as has been expected.
So far, there is no evidence that the 'tweak' was even involved. The combats in question might not have even reached the old ceiling, let alone the new ceiling. If a developer looked at a combat replay they could say for sure. But - given the limited information you have provided so far, the result is well within the realm of possible.

A fully gears 3500 AC Allies carrier fleet will still get her ass kicked when a 1300 KB and 400 AC LBA moved in. The LBA was launched from the only LV8 AF nearby.

Uh, you are comparing attacks on fast BBs and a crapload of DDs against attacks on CVE´s (which are bound to have similar attributes as your average merchantman)? Sorry, but if you really attempt to do this, and mean it, this directly contradicts your statement that you "have played the game long enough" - for about anything.

I have the weird feeling this thread will deteriorate fast...

So I guess I'm providing first hand data for the community and developer then.

Just compare the two battles...
OK, so you change the subject to something else. Now you are just complaining. Bye.

Here is the full combat report, I'm not sure what you are looking for though.

Group patrol altitude is 20000 , scrambling fighters between 5000 and 22000.

For example for the fact that your CAP patrol alt was about 10k above the incoming naval strike and at the same time had to engage LBA attack which arrived significantly higher. That explains a lot. Besides what has been mentioned already this is a major factor.

CR alone still does not tell everything, but this is enough to answer your initial question. Yes, in this situation your loss figures seem quite plausable.
