Program not reesponding

When the AI plays it turns because it takes so much time to do other things with my computer, such as surf the web or read files. When I switch screens the WitE screen goes blank and get a not responding error message and it takes a few minutes before the program starts responding again. I am using a Nvidia Geforce GTS 650 video card. I never used to have this issue with earlier versions of the game and older drivers (I can not say of it was there with Nvidia as I used to have a AMD card). Is there a work around to this issue?

Even with my old dual-core I never had WitE lock-up or slow-down my computer but I also have 8 Gigs of RAM. The only slowdown was noticed when the game was autosaving.
