New scenario: Pyrpolitis 1/14 (WIP)

Post by Dimitris »

Hi all,

A small scenario based on a recent RL rapid-reaction COMAO exercise in the Aegean. Feedback & AARs welcome [:)]

================================

Pyrpolitis (Firestarter) 1/14 was a COMAO exercise executed by the rapid-reaction elements of the Hellenic Air Force (HAF) in the early hours of Thursday, Jan 30 2014, as part of the the larger Astrapi (Lightning) 1/14 joint-force exercise. During the exercise, aircraft from multiple HAF airbases participated in assaulting a strong naval formation (and its air cover) off the island of Chios. This is a reproduction of the exercise scenario.

This is a small, simple (but not too easy!) AAW & ASuW (maritime strike) scenario with a duration of 8 hours. Greece is the only playable side.

Designer Note: In the real exercise, the frigate Lemnos stood-in for the OPFOR naval formation, with several HAF F-16s simulating the OPFOR air cover. Since the scenario of the exercise describes "a powerful naval formation" as the OPFOR, a number of representative potential adversary naval & air units have been used to populate OPFOR assets.

BRIEFING:

*** OPERATIONAL: IMMEDIATE ***

ATTN: Commander, HAF RR elements

INTEL/SITREP

A major OPFOR naval task force has taken up station between our mainland and the major islands of Chios & Psarra (ref points 1-4 on the map). Concurrent with movements of other OPFOR assets, it appears very likely that this force acts as the screen / sea-control element of a possible invasion action of one/both of these islands or any of the smaller islets in the area.

ENEMY FORCES

Enemy forces comprise of a number of main surface combattants, including a number of AAW-optimized frigates (likely AAW systems incl. SM-1MR, NSSM, ESSM). No auxiliary or amphib vessels have been observed in this group. Our EW radars have detected strong air cover for this group from what appear to be F-16Cs (likely weaponry AIM-9M/X, AIM-120B/C-7). Additional forward-staged AEW&C and tanker elements are likely to support the air umbrella.

FRIENDLY FORCES

The rapid-reaction elements under your command consist of:

* 4x EMB-145 AEW&C at Elefsina
* 4x F-16C Blk52+ (SEAD - HARM) at Souda
* 4x F-16C Blk50 at Nea Anchialos (AAW - AIM-120)
* 4x Mirage 2000EG at Tanagra (ASuW - Exocet)
* 4x Mirage 2000-5 Mk2 at Tanagra (AAW - MICA)
* 4x F-4E AUP at Andravida (ASuW - Maverick-G)
* 4x A-7H at Araxos (ASuW - Mk82)

MISSION

Use your available assets to cause maximum possible damage to the OPFOR naval force. Attrition to enemy air assets is welcome (particularly AEW/tanker elements) but is a strictly secondary objective. You have 8 hours to accomplish your mission.

EXECUTION

At your discretion. Be aware that the tight time window does not allow for many return flights (unless on light A2A loadouts) so most/all of the work will have to be done in one go.

COMMAND AND SIGNAL

Command: ATA (Larissa)

Signal: EMCON State C (Unrestricted Emissions)

Just realized that the DB3000 version used in the scen, v404, has not yet been publicly released.
Please download it from here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B205vp ... sp=sharing

And unzip to your \DB folder.

Give it a go. Not really a fan of exercise scenarios but i'll run with it. Got my arse handed to me at the start. Enemy achieve full air superiority. Gome over really. manage to take out a ship with an exorcet before those planes got shot down too.

Pergite <-- Is this with B487? There was a known issue on it with crazy fuel consumption which has been resolved in B488.

You keep the updates coming so its hard to keep track. I will retry it with 488.

This scenario is really difficult.
The only way have made progress so far is to actively sacrifice pilots as baits for SAM/AAMs.

I initially had a cunning plan to use the Petalioi Gulf for my approach with a devastating strike package. Flying close to super-sonic at 46 meters above the water, with a 200m rock wall to the east shielding against both enemy radars and missiles... so I thought.

The picture below shows the first volley of OPFOR AIM-120s. My entire strike package was neutralized after three additional volleys like that.

Shouldn't the terrain offer more protection?

Hi Sunburn,
I also tried it a few times and best I got was a ratio of 3:1 against me. The amount of Amraams fired makes it practically a no-go.
Might worth adding Mirage (which makes sense that Greeks would prepare ahead of such an exercise).
Also Greeks operate S-300 in Crete, Patriot in Athens & Thessaloniki and I think they had HAWK in Skyros Island.
They also have a few land-based Exocet in either Chios or Mytilini.
Even with all the above mentioned , it would still be like a knife fighting in a phone booth !!
Regards,
J

Just found this thread after being destroyed several times. Thought I was just a novice but it looks like this one needs a easy overhaul. The designer just has to systematically remove OPFOR F16s until the battle is a challenge but winnable. Given OPFOR is already in the air, even an equal number of fighters is going to be a challenge for the Greek player since they have to overcome SAMs to finish off their enemy. Otherwise it could be a nice one to learn how to defeat a larger force perhaps using some "tricks". Also, why 4 early warning aircraft that are 3 hours from being ready? I would nix them altogether

Not sure if this is illegal necro, but this seems to be the most relevant thread:

This mission seems impossible without super gamey tactics.
I am currently considering using the AEW with a ferry loadout as sponges, and using maybe the southern HARM armed planes to lead the enemy fighters away (which might work vs AI but not in real life).

But as is, I can at most shoot down 6-8 enemy F16s while loosing everything I have.

One thing that also annoys me: Why does Greece not have a single SAM? It's weird having the friendly airspaces crowded with boogeys as soon as you launch a single plane.
