Trouble Using the Editor

Post by pws1225 »

I have a new problem when trying to use the Editor to access Scenario 1 and Scenario 7 (the Quiet China variant). When I try to load either scenario, I get the message "File open failed in AeAiData::ReadFile". I can load Scenario 2 and 8 without problems, just not Scenarios 1 and 7. I thought perhaps a file had become corrupted so I did a full reinstall from the game CD but still get the same error even when I double click on the AE Editor.exe file in the Scen folder. Does anybody have any ideas what might be wrong?

Thanks in advance, Paul

No idea, but aren't there updated versions of these scenarios in Andy Mac's thread? If so, perhaps you could download those and see if they open.

Which thread is that? Andy is a prolific writer of threads.

It should be titled "Unofficial Scenario Updates". I forget whether it's in this section or in Scenarios & Modding, but I believe it's in the Scenarios section.

It is not stickied, but it should be.

Sounds like you don't have a AI scenario file (aei999.dat where 999 is the scenario number). You need this to start up editor.

Hi Michael - the aie999.dat file is not in the SCEN folder even after a fresh install from the CD. Did it come out in a subsequant patch?

For scenario 001, there should be a aei001.dat, for 002, a aei002.dat, etc.
There should be one for every official scenario. In addition, there can be aei001-01.dat, ..-02.dat, which are multiple copies of the AI with some changes, but can't be edited unless you change the name back to the standard name (without the -xx).

Sorry Michael, I misread your earlier reply. I have the aei001.dat file in the SCEN folder along with the aei001-01 though aei001-16.dat files. Same thing for the scenario 8 files. All are fresh from reloading the game from the CD. Not being able to use the editor for these scenarios is no big deal, just more of a convenience than anything else.. If no one else is having the same problem, I can live with it.

Regards, Paul

Got it fixed! Thanks Michael, it was just as you said. I had renamed the aei001.dat file to aei001.bak a while back for some odd reason but never changed it back. Once again, user error!
