Giving orders to a stack

Post by Gribeauval »

Hello, if the player selects the limited orders option from the game settings, he cannot use unit multi-select (according to the game errata).
But, the player can still select a stack and give a single order to the stack : for the cost of one order, he can issue 2, 3 or more orders.
Is this intended ?

Can you get a screen shot of the situation?

Sorry Captain, but I can't.
You can easily recreate this situation.
You launch a scenario with limited orders.
You right-click on a stack, you chose 'select the stack', you give a move hasty order.

After that, you will notice that only one order has been consumed, but all the units in the stack have got an order.

I will test this out. We have a Dev call tonight and I'll run this past the crew.

Thanks for the details!

I have seen that before too. Able to select the entire stack and give one order for all but you cannot select adjacent units, just those in the same hex/stack and give a single order. I can try to reproduce it and get a few screenshots later today if that would help.

IMHO, a group order should be restricted to subordinate units only but allowable for all subordinate units within command range, which could be further restricted to visual command range. For example, a Soviet tank battalion with companies abreast across 3 hexes should be able to execute simple battle drills using single orders.

The command and control scheme in the old GDW boardgame "Assault" did this pretty well and allowed the Soviets to get the most out of their limited control points. Conversely the NATO units with more control points were able to be more flexible. I think that's an important aspect that this game could emulate pretty easily down the road and should be reconsidered.

The discussion in the meeting last night was a stack could be given a single order and that was okay. The trade for better communication is being a nicer target for enemy fire.

As for the Assault style command we are doing similar by focusing on NATO platoons versus WP companies when orders are given. I would like to revisit the loop timing and orders limits once we get 2.04 out the door in late February. Look at getting some tweaks into the first expansion.
