French Fleet vs Italians

Post by Majorball68 »

I have come to the conclusion that it isn't worth facing the Italian Fleet off against the French. An early DOW is risky and limits your transport to moves from port to port rather than get caught in a sea zone, providing they don't get intercepted. If allies get lucky you can lose both Italian transports very early if you leave them at sea. Meanwhile the French fleet can take most of the losses leaving the CW fleet untouched.

There are some downsides to having the French take a lot of the losses in terms of damaged ships, etc and that is the Axis usually winds up in control of what is in the repair pool.

The other issue is unless it is carefully managed, the French run into oil issues if you are playing with that option.

Oh I don't play with oil either, but for those that do, the French have oil issues unless they get help.

Majorball68, I agree with ya.
One of the downsides to early entry with Italy is finding a french ship with strong magnets attracting shells. It sure does make naval battles less appetizing.
If you can chip away at the french fleet with aircraft, it can be very cost effective. Flak power is pretty weak for the french.

The biggest reasons to jump in the war early with the Italians isn't to directly fight the French, it's to

A) Keep the med closed to convoy points: While the Allies are actually stronger than you, even in your backyard, early game, it's hard for them to put enough force together to simultaneously protect their convoys and to beat you up. If you stay out of the war, you run a real risk of the Allies shipping in 2-5 resources a turn through the Med, and thus allowing for both the French and the British to have full or near-full production. (especially if you're not playing with Oil)

B) Entering the war allows the Germans to lend you resources and BP. This is a good thing.
