Conflict of Heroes: Storms of Steel BETA After Action Report

Post by Philkian »

This AAR as been made by Matrix user Shayne (Jamm)

Hello Gamers,
I’ve been involved with beta testing on the upcoming ‘Storms of Steel’ game from Western Civilization Software, and I thought I’d write up a short AAR from one of the scenarios I recently played.

The firefight is called ‘ Wounded Tiger’.
An immobilised Tiger tank has been left behind during the German offensive. As a German force moves in to recover the Tiger and tow it to safety, it engages a group of Russian tanks seeking to finish it off.

Image

The firefight is 5 turns in length.
German Forces: 1 Tiger ( immobilised with functioning armament )
2 Panzer III L
1 Panzer IV H
1 Opel truck
All units are capable of towing the Tiger tank.

Russian Forces: 4 T34c
4 T70

I choose to play as the Russians.
I play on the Easy setting to keep the firefight at its’ original design and to prevent the German side from getting extra units ( especially Tigers ).

TURN 1

Image

Here is the opening setup of forces.
The Russians are outclassed by the Germans at range, so I have to close with the enemy.
My plan is to move my T34’s to the North and flank the Tiger. I will use terrain to mask my approach. I will rush my T70’s to the village and distract the Germans there, and maybe get in a lucky shot.

Image

I begin moving my T34’s to the cover of the large building.
The Tiger comes to life and fires on a T70 and damages it.

Image

The Russian light T70’s move towards the village.

Image

At the end of the turn, I manage to rally my damaged T70.
My T34’s are in cover on the Tiger’s flank and my T70’s are speeding to the village.

TURN 2

Image

The Tiger starts the second turn with a bang.
A T70 explodes into flames after taking a shot from the powerful 88 mm.

Image

The Tiger fires again and another T70 is destroyed.
My light tanks cannot survive much longer against the Tiger’s fire.
The T34’s continue their moves to flank.

Image

I move out 2 of my T34’s and open fire on the Tiger.
These are low percentage shots and the first one misses.

Image

I roll a 10 with my second shot and score a hit on the Tiger.

Image

I move a T34 from behind the woods and go toe to toe with the Tiger.
The dice go cold and I roll a 3, a miss.

Image

My 2 surviving T70’s move to the village.
One scores a hit on the Opel truck.

TURN 3

Image

A T70 takes a hit and is immobilised.

Image

My T34 uses CAPs to modify its’ roll and fires, point blank, at the Tiger.
Boom, the Tiger is destroyed and the Russians get 3 Victory points for the kill.

Image

The German Panzer IV H promptly responds by destroying the offending T34.
I gain a small victory in the village as my badly mauled T70 destroys the Opel truck.

Image

The victory is fleeting.
A Panzer III L pokes its’ cannon from the trees and finishes off my damaged T70.

TURN 4

Image

It is a close match, 4 to 4.
The German armor remains in the village and manage to destroy the gun on an advancing T34.
I do not have much left to work with for the final turn.

TURN 5

Image

I move a T34 forward and exchange fire with a Panzer III L.
Both shots miss.

Image

I play a 1D6 card and receive more APs for my T34.
The German plays a Command Action card and takes another shot at the T34, but misses.
The T34 returns fire but also misses.

Image

I move up my last operational T34.
It takes a shot and hits the Panzer III L.

Image

The Panzer III L rallies, which is lucky for the Germans as my T34 fires again for another hit.

Image

This is how the battlefield looked at the end of the firefight.
I couldn’t get another kill and the match ends in a tie.

Image

Here is the Final score screen.
It was a close firefight and another kill would have turned the match into a victory for one side or the other.

The lethality of the tanks has definitely increased with the later war units.
This is one thing you’ll surely learn to respect in SOS. These guns can kill at range and makes movement a whole new challenge.
The new units, maps and firefights will be a lot of fun for COH players.
